Rape and GBV: Ndifon calls on Nollywood to join the Fight

A youth leader and University lecturer in Cross River State has called on the entertainment industry in Nigeria to join the fight against Rape and other societal vices recently plaguing the country.

Victor Ndifon, who is the Secretary of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter made this known while addressing newsmen immediately after a road protest against Rape by a coalition of NGO's in Calabar Cross River State, condemned in totality the act of rape while calling on Nigeria movie giants - NOLLYWOOD to assist in reducing the rate of moral decadence by toning down on the quantum of sexual innuendos  expressed in the content they roll out through the media.

"Our brothers in the entertainment industry really need to help in this fight. We need to tone down on the subtle pornography  our youths watch, we need to also use the entertainment platform to pass across the message of decency and let's tell the true African story through the media.

"Rape is not only an African thing, it is the expression of a deep seated moral decadence that rare its ugly head in all parts of the world." Ndifon noted.  He further admonished everyone to join hands to ensure that these issues do not continue to reappear.

Ndifon, who is a frontline aspirant for the state chairmanship opined that subtle  Pornography could be the  major  influencer of rape and other sexual violence in the country, stating that the sensual content of most musical videos is a thing of concern as this has helped fan the embers of rape as well as increase the number of rape cases in the country.

According to the pragmatic Youth leader, "Pornography is a major issue to contend with when dealing with the issues of rape in our society, the rate of moral decadence in the Nation and among our youths is very alarming. By Pornography we may not necessarily be referring to direct Pornography but the things we see in our entertainment industry, in movies, in musical videos even on cyber spaces."

Ndifon used the opportunity to also call on relevant regulatory agencies to sensor media content that floods the screen of many homes and the social media. He also called on the security operatives and other relevant agencies of government to ensure rape cases are probably investigated, leaving no stone unturned with perpetrators brought to book without fear or favour not minding social or political status of offenders.

He however, appreciated the various groups who came out in their numbers to protest against the evil monsters, stating that the advocacy shouldn't end in the urban areas but should also be taken to the rural areas. He pledged the support of National Youth Council of Nigeria  Cross River Chapter  under the leadership of Prince Ndiyo Ndiyo in making sure the message is taken to the grassroot.
