NORTHFEST COMPLETES TRIPOD OF CULTURAL/HARVEST FESTIVALS IN THE STATE By Kingsley Agim

The Cross River State Government’s adoption of the last Saturday, being 30th of September, 2017 for the celebration of New Yam Festival for the entire Northern Cross River, tagged ‘NorthFest’, completes a ‘tripod’ of harvest/cultural events in the State. Speaking to newsmen during a press briefing of the Central Planning Committee held recently at the Press Centre of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Peter Ojie, disclosed that, as an initiative of the Governor, “NorthFest seeks, in essence, to complete the ‘tripod of festivals’ that are meant to enhance the cultural and tourism propensity of the State”. “The Northern part of the State is endowed. But much more so, the northern part of the State is one that is driven by an agrarian economy – agriculture is the mainstay. This festival is one that identifies the people of the north and showcases the beauty of our agricultural occupation as a people. It seeks to bring the agro-based culture of the people to the fore, and find the linkages that there are between that culture and the mainstay of the people”, Chief Ojie added. Chief Ojie stated that “beyond the celebration as a cultural/harvest festival, it is a celebration that looks to encourage, inspire and find relevance for a means of livelihood that the people have been used to, adding that the event will expose not just yam as the king of crops in the agrarian society of the northern part of the State, but will also display other crops. “If you follow the trend, especially the trend that has been the preoccupation of this administration, you would understand that agriculture ranks very high. That is why you see new revolutions taking place – in rice industry, maize industry, cocoa exploitation and several other crops. “Naturally, in the north part of the State, you will find that some of these crops are crops that have been there. I make bold to say that what you find nationally as rice that is produced in the neighbouring states is actually farmed and produced in Cross River State. So we have come home to ensure that those crops are produced in the State are showcased”, the Chairman revealed. Chief Ojie also disclosed that the State Government is poised to ensuring that finished products for some of these crops are done here in the State, which explains why there is a cocoa processing facility being developed in Ikom, just as a rice processing facility is being developed in Ogoja, stating that the State Government intends to commence production of ‘Ogoja Rice’ by December, 2017. “This cultural festival is seeking to ensure that not just yam is celebrated, but the fact that we have other crops that we need to give exposure to ensure that our people take keener interest in, grow beyond subsistent farming and get to levels where we could begin to farm to boost our economy and earn a lot more fromit”, Chief Ojie disclosed. The Chairman further hinted that the festival would feature Mr. & Miss NorthFest, Best Farmer of the Year, amongst others. He used the opportunity to invite the public to come and enjoy the rich and assorted cuisines that abound in the Northern Senatorial District. In her remarks, the Publicity and Branding Sub-Committee Chairman and Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Barr. (Mrs.) RoseMary Effiom Archibong said that Governor Ben Ayade is keen in moving Cross River State forward, ensuring that the State indeed becomes the Eldorado. Mrs. Archibong also restated Governor Ben Ayade-led administration’s resolve to unite the people of the State through our robust cultural endowments. The Information boss hailed Governor Ayade’s wisdom in adopting a festival each for the three Senatorial District of the State. “We all are familiar with the Leboku Festival, which is a factor for the Central Senatorial District. His Excellency Senator Ben Ayade has adopted ‘Utobo Obo’ as a factor for the South, and of course, for the North is the birthing of the Northern Senatorial District Unifying Festival called ‘NorthFest’. “Governor Ben Ayade believes in inclusivity, and so Cross Riverians in this Senatorial District would have a feel of governance, participating in that which the State is known for”, Mrs. Archibong concluded. NorthFest would be a week-long event which would climax with a grand finale on Saturday, 30th September, 2017, at the Ogoja Stadium.

IPOB to Saraki: " Your Speech came late".

On the 18th of September 2017, the Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki called on the people of Southeast to be calm that the National Assembly will investigate the crisis between Southeast and the military following the clash between the military and the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB). He pleaded with IPOB to maintain peace and tranquility and go about their business transaction but in turn, The IPOB said the senate's president speech was medicine after death as they recall how the military invaded their homes, burned down their houses, killed their people and left them with no option than to defend themselves which is constitutional. They further said that there is no need to investigate the crisis as he, the senate president doesn't genuinely care and to back up their point about him, they asked '' Don't you have television set? Or are there no smart phones? Do you read newspapers at all? That you didn't see how we were rendered homeless by the military. Do you want to investigate on the matter or could it be your normal tactics to squander Nigeria's money? We forsee you creating a body called " The Senate Committee on Southeast crisis Investigation" but frankly speaking, leave the investigation to the paramilitary and concerned bodies and focus on passing bills that will not change our educational system, boost our security level and even create massive employment opportunities for our teeming Youths that are in the street. if you were wise, the passage of the Peace Corps Bill would have been adopted to boost the security in our country and it would have added to your greatest accomplishments. The operation Python dance to the east is a clear indication that it is a well planned genocide, well calculated to reduce the population of IPOB in totality by the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria and as such, our President is bias, sectional and undemocratic. The era in which Nigeria exist is "pure democracy not military regime" they cried out. Finally, we question the senate on the ill mannered treatment the military gave us? fake speeches and assurances will never bring back our sons and daughters that were trying to defend their land and houses. Freedom is all we need!

Inok Hails Gov Ayade Leadership Inaugurates Akpabuyo Chapter Exco By Kingsley Agim

The State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Edim Inok Edim has commended Governor Ben Ayade’s leadership style and described it as “detribalized and all-encompassing”. Chief Inok gave this commendation during the formal inauguration of the Akpabuyo Chapter of the Party, held recently at the Akpabuyo Local Government Council Headquarters. The PDP Chieftain who described the statewide Chapter Inauguration exercise as “very impressive and unprecedented”, expressed satisfaction at the turnout and show of solidarity from the Akpabuyo people. In his words, “we thank God for our Governor. When we call him ‘Digital Governor’, a lot of people do not understand. We thank him for providing this platform, providing these opportunities – all the appointments, including those inaugurated are all his products”. Branding Akpabuyo as “the home of PDP”, Chief Inok also charged the people to continue to be the leading light in their support for the Party. And in most cases, it is impunity when imposing candidates on people. Who is responsible for the Adim and Abini damaged roads in Cross River State? Is it the Federal Government or the State Government?

It is pathetic the number of damaged roads that are in Cross River state, as the day goes by, they get worst. They are nothing to write home about especially the one between Adim and Abini villages. Road users spend their night in unsecured environment, I mean the traders, travellers and even drivers inclusive. it is enlisted as a federal government road but again it's right to confirm if its truth. So, an interview with a tanker driver whose identity is withheld said the Governor of cross river state should re- examine his priorities ranging from his giant dream of having a superhighway built in the state to ensuring that the state's present need for a smooth road is achieved even as the federal government is also beckoned on to help considering that a journey of one hour now last six hours which is challenging and time consuming. He mentioned this in an interview session with detailing Cross River. Com and In his words, he also mentioned his encounter with hoodlums who snatched his phone from him. He pleaded for Government to intervene soonest. Some traders on their path, cried out that their goods are mostly perishable products which gets spoilt on the way due to hold up caused by bad roads. They advised that road construction contracts be endorsed and given to well trained and competent persons instead of political contractors. They, however, call on meaningful and right thinking members of the society to plead with the federal government to act fast and save citizens of the stress of travelling on bad roads as those concerned should look into the matter with intent of solving it.

Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones Williams Destructive Critics and Fighter's are His Kinsmen

The House of Assembly member of Yakurr II Constituency Rt. Hon Eteng Jones Williams has received a lot of criticism from His kinsmen and people of Yakurr II Constituency since his emergence as member representing Yakurr II Constituency. Rt.Hon Eteng Jones Williams who is well distinguished from members of cross river House of Assembly due to his professional and democratic representation as well as his contributions in the 7th and 8th house has been totally condemned by his wailing wailers who sees nothing positive but negativity in his representation even though he is seen as a free giver. It is on record that Hon. Eteng, started his philanthropist gesture when he was not a politician, he single handedly sponsored Mkpani sons/daughters in schools and now as a member representing Yakurr II Constituency he had increase the numbers. The beneficiaries of his good will where drawn from all villages in Yakurr II Constituency and presently he had constructed a six class rooms in secondary school Mkpani that was burned by Nko community during the communal crash. Many other projects are on going, which includes Ebilebit primary school, donated a big generator to Mkpani health care center, sponsoring of law student to law school, electrification of Lebang/Lokpoi community and Lebang/Lokpoi road which is still on pipe line. Donation of incubator to Mkpani health care center again. If you doubt my report, visit all areas mentioned. It is very appalling that those who once sing his praise and supported him during his tenure are the same persons that are praying for his down fall. Some of them have benefited financially, some drinks, eat, sleep and wears his clothes but today the said person is an enemy to his kinsmen. I was in a trance and this questions were running in my mind "What wrong has he committed to be marginalised by his own people? Where did he miss it that made him to be treated that way? Looking at his community monarchies conflict, he bought a cow and kneel in old market square to plead for peace and unity in the community but still he is seen as a sponsor of the conflicting monarchies. I believe one thing and is not far from the truth, those who would bring you down are not outsiders but members of your household, your friends, and loved ones. Everyone one in Mkpani community and Yakurr II Constituency is an enemy, I have no reservation about that. I wish you well Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones Williams, even as I await constituency project to be executed and also the Lebang/Lokpol road, the electrification of the two communities which is on the pipe line to come to materialization. To you that had turn traditional affairs to be political, be careful because the seed you are sowing will soon hill fruit and your generations will enjoy it to its fullest. To those of you that has turn the social media as an avenue of discussing our community problems, so that you will be called a good man desist from such, if you so cares about your community well being, call for a town hall meeting and let us thrash out the problems. I believed we would disagree to agree. Thanks sons and daughters of Yakurr II Constituency . I love you all.
