The association of online journalists today 5th September 2017 paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of information cross river state.
The Commissioner during her speech applauded online journalists for their effort to get cross riverians and the globe enlightened through online publications. In her words, she said that online news give speed to reporting and engages young ones with detailed information. She pleaded that online journalists should apply more caution in disseminating information, that they( online journalists) should be critical and truthful to ensure having news worthy stories.
She further unveiled the ministry's intention to collaborate with online journalists within the state on a program titled ''A media literacy education for youths" with emphasis on social media management and promised to engage online journalists practising within the state.
As online media mentors, she said that young people rely on online journalist news contents and as such, should endeavor to educate and utilize the capacity which they serve and stop publishing on " hate speech" which only sends out wrong signals to the public and regarded as a "No No for the ministry" thus among others, be a major reason for the planning of the said program.
In summary, the golden advice of Mr Ben Okache was for online journalists to register with a union body inorder to feel protected and speak in one great voice. He said as practising online journalists, there's need to register in the ongoing NUJ registration process inorder to be certified journalist.
