US thumps up Ayade's industrialisation drive

The United States Consul General to Nigeria, Mr. John Bray says he is impressed with the industrialisation drive of the Cross River Governor, Prof Ben Ayade within his three years in office.

Bray stated this in Calabar on Wednesday shortly after being conducted round several industries built by the Ayade-led administration in the state.

Industries visited included the Cross River Garment Factory, the Rice Seeds and Seedlings Factory, the Calabar Pharmaceutical Company and the 21 megawatts power plant.

"I am really impressed as I have not seen a lot of things like these in Nigeria in my five years in the country. Seeing all these developments in one area is very impressive," the US Consul General remarked.

Bray who was in Calabar to prepare grounds for some visitors into the state explained that he had to take time out to see investments opportunities in the state and that what he saw is a beautiful state that would compel him to visit often.

On possible areas of collaboration between the United States and Cross River, he said it was evident that such exist already with the American-made tractors on ground at the rice seeds and seedlings factory as well as American engineers at the power plant.

His words: "There are always areas of collaboration. Seeing the American-made tractors in the rice city with United States engineers on ground, that is an evidence of collaboration between the United States and Nigeria, though from a private sector, but there is collaboration already."

Continuing, Bray said: "it is beautiful because government cannot do everything, so seeing the private sector here and United States products and engineers on ground, it is very great."

In his reaction,  Governor Ayade expressed delight that his efforts at developing the state were being acknowledged, adding that "it is a reflection of the fact that I have a pass mark from America and Germany. Americans don't mince their words, when they want to say something to you, they will tell you truly how they feel."

"This is my third year in office and we have gone round three factories with many more to go if we had the time. I wanted to take him to the largest banana plantation in Africa few minutes away from here, but I am sure we have other things to do, but one day we will be back and I will take them through."

Ayade who commended Bray for accentuating and concentrating America investments and interest in Cross River, noted that the deployment of American turbines, engines and other machines in the factories remain a source of delight to him.

Highpoints of the visit was the planting of rice seedlings with the transplanter machine at the factory amidst cheers by Cross Riverians who gathered at the scene chanting, "digital," "digital governor," "super digital," "na you we know."

DEMOCRACY DAY: AYADE TASKS LEADERS TO FOCUS ON THE PEOPLE

By David Ejishie

In the spirit of Democracy Day Celebration, Cross River Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade has called on politicians to focus more on the people.

The Governor made the call tuesday, in Calabar, during the Democracy Day Celebration in the State.

Prof. Ayade, stressed the need for politicians to open the horizon by empowering people in order to check the level of turbulence associated with electioneering periods.

He said it was to this end that he focused on the expansion of Government as his first term policy, while providing food on the table for all.

Ayade noted that the choice of expanding government is a deliberate plan to reduce social tension, the temperature of the political heat that was building up in the State, and also to ensure that young people are not left idle.

According to Ayade, "If leaders focus on the masses and the development of their communities, it will go a long way in reducing the conflicts currently being experienced in some parts of the country".

He noted that despite having one of the most bloated governments in Africa with over 4000 appointees and with one of the lowest federal allocation in the country, his administration is using the power of intellect with dedication to serve, to run the State, while also embarking on gigantic projects, as well as prompt payment of salaries to civil servants
On the upcoming elections, the Governor stated that he expects to see more finesse and more educated people in politics and better character, noting that it is not normal to witness tension in every election.

Prior to the Democracy Day Celebration in the State, Governor Ayade had on Monday announced the immediate employment of additional 1000 staff into the State's Garment factory as part of his commitment towards celebrating the Democracy Day.

Cross River Commissioner for Information and Orientation Mrs. RoseMary Archibong in an interview, remarked that the third year anniversary of the Prof Ben Ayade's administration was worth celebrating as the Governor had turned the state into an industrial hub.

She noted that Cross Riverians have started to enjoy the dividends of democracy as seen in the current massive infrastructural build-out in the state, adding that the Governor has indeed brought governance closer to the people.

Highpoint of the event was the cutting of the Democracy Cake by the Governor Sen. Ben Ayade, jointly supported by his wife Dr. Linda Ayade and the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong.

The event marking the celebration in the State, saw various groups including men, women, students, workers youths who defiled the rain, as they joyfully drove round the capital city in a motorcade, chanting songs of solidarity for Ayade and his team for transforming their lives as evident in the long term projects spread across the three senatorial districts of the State.

ERIC AZOGOR THE DG CROSS RIVER VISIONARY YOUTHS CELEBRATES HON. MIKE ETABA FOR THREE SOLID YEARS OF GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS:

 LET US CONSOLIDATE OUR GAINS!

Defining democracy on practical terms, perhaps the hallmark of every true democracy. This definition typically is not done with words, actions speak a better language in these corridors.

Detractors have often taken to address the seating member representing Obubra Etung Federal constituency as the silent one. Hon. Mike Etaba has silently facilitated jobs for Many constituents making life worth living for them.

What haters do not appreciate is the fact that silence is golden, and has an eloquence on its own. In the midst of all this silence, Hon Mike Etaba has a number of sterling achievements which we make bold to bring to the fore in commemoration of his three years in office.

Among others, he has: a superbly articulated Bill for an Act to amend the National Directorate of Employment Act 2014, Laws of the Federation to create Skills Acquisition, Artisans and Vocational Centre for Self- Empowerment Programmme for National Development and Related Matters, a couple of Motions, including the one calling on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to intervene in the communal crises in Obubra and Etung LGA'S respectively, reinstatement of Mr. Orok Orok Takon (Ebhari-Mgbe) into the Police Force after six years, facilitation of the UBE special intervention for 2015-2016 to Schools in Ovokwa, Yala Nkum, and Apiapum in Obubura and Bendeghe and Nsofang Communities in Etung L.G.A.'S respectively as part of his Constituency Projects, also donated Vans to Obubra and Etung police force to better enhance the security network in the Constituency,
Interestingly our visionary leader has intellectually contributed immensely to the growth of Democracy through his fervent contributions in the house proceedings and has sponsored so many life enhancing bills as follows:

(1).  Energy Commission of Nigeria Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2018 (HB.1290)

(2) Commercial and Industrial Development Authority (Promotion and Incentive) Bill, 2018 (HB.1291)

3. Bill for an Act to Provide a Legal Framework for the Establishment of Commercial and Industrial Development Authority which shall provide Designated Areas for Industrial Estates, Parks, Clusters, Enterprises Zones and Incubators in each Zone of the Country, Provide for the Establishment, Development or Maintenance of Industrial undertaking and Incentives to Industrialist; and for Related Matters (HB.1291)
ETC.

We still remember the cash gifts of half a million naira given to each constituency as part of the build up towards the Easter. celebrations. We do not deny the many claims that he is the youngest member in the green chambers, Detractors can go on wailing. We know that the performance of an honorable member is not determined by how much noise he makes; keep on keeping on, our silent achiever. It is basically interests and jealousy that has attracted him so many enemies. But, what one is, he is. And, Hon Mike Etaba is a jolly good fellow.

As you mark three solid years in office, we the Cross River Visionary Youths commemorate this day with you. We know you have brought us so much goodness. We only beg that you continue in your bid to see a better Obubra-Etung. Never mind the critics; most of them are Mike Etaba wannabes. The next one year will be better. Your second term in office is not negotiable, as we want to have more of you. We the Cross River Visionary Youths wish you a happy anniversary, and a happy Democracy day.

Warmest regards

BARR CHRIS AGARA FELICITATES WITH GOVERNOR BEN AYADE ON HIS 3 YEARS ANNIVERSARY IN OFFICE

BARR CHRIS AGARA,my family and the entire team FRESH IDEAS heartily felicitates with the digital Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof Ben Ayade on the occasion of his 3rd year anniversary in office.

Your Excellency, your sterling performance in the last three years has earned you several accolades and nicknames from your fans and numerous  supporters. While some called you the digital governor considering the youthful swag and energy you have brought to governance, others prefer to called you the Alert master, apparently in appreciation for the way you have religiously and consistently paid workers salary and the over 3000 political appointees your administration brought on board. But I called you the promise keeper.

Your Excellency, when you came on board, you saw the need to decouple the State from federal allocation through the building of industries that will create jobs for our youths. Three years later, I am happy to note that the State is now an industrial haven with almost every part of the State literally turning into a construction site.

From the Cross River State Garment factory that already employs more than 2000 of our people, the Calabar pharmaceutical company, the cocoa processing plant in Ikom, the toothpick factory in Ekori, the ultra-modern rice mill in Ogoja, the deep seaport project and the Rice seedling plant among several others are all eloquent testimonies of a promise kept.

This is not forgetting other critical sectors like health,Education,Agriculture and Human development where your administration have recorded several success stories against the expectations of naysayers.

Like Shirley Chisholm rightly opined "Nobody makes progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. People make progress by implementing ideas". Your Excellency, today Cross River State have come this far in just three years with you on the saddle because of the brilliant ideas you brought to bare and most importantly because you deliberately decided to see possibilities where others see impossibilities.

As we match towards 2019, be rest assured of my unwavering support and that of my entire team as we remain committed to seeing you return for a second term for the overall good of Cross Riverians.

Congratulations once again Your Excellency.

Peace Corps Bill not dead, Akoh reacts to media reports

By Yemi Itodo

National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh says the Bill to establish Nigerian Peace Corps was still on course and not dead, contrary to some media reports.

The House of Representatives had on Thursday last week, kicked against the second reading of the bid to override President Muhammad Buhari's veto on the Bill for an Act to establish Nigerian Peace Corps.

Some media reports had it that the Bill was finally dead, owing to the fact that the overriding process could not scale through second reading at the green chamber.

But Akoh, at a world press briefing in Abuja on Monday, faulted the media reports, describing it as "mischievous", "highly misleading and a misrepresentation of facts".

Akoh said "any discerning mind will know too that it is not the Bill itself that suffered a temporary setback via rejection, rather, it is the overriding process initiated by the House of Representatives.

"Therefore, without any fear of contradiction, let me say it loud and clear that the Nigerian Peace Corps Establishment Bil is not dead as widely publicised, but still alive and on course".

He pointed out the merits of the Bill and the socio-economic benefits enshrined therein for the Nigerian youth and the nation at large, which he said, were the reasons why both chambers of the National Assembly overwhelmingly supported and passed the Bill in the first place.

Akoh, however, said there was "a deliberate gangup against the Bill and its good intentions were highly misrepresented by those who have access to Mr President", adding that, it was on that premises that the President withheld his assent.

The Peace Corps Boss expressed disappointment over lawmakers who voted against the overriding process on Thursday, saying it was "a clear case of approbate and reprobate", which he said was caused by "subtle threats anchored on political interests".

He said, "the youths now know their enemies as the members who spoke against the overriding only succeeded in trading this all-important youth friendly Bill on the altar of securing re-election tickets".

While appreciating the "patriotism" of those who spoke and voted in favour of the Bill, Akoh said the organisation would remain grateful to the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and the leadership of the House of Representatives for standing by the Bill.

Akoh expressed hope that "the politically-motivated challenge" currently facing the Corps would still be resolved, stressing that, the President would look into it and recall the Bill for assent.

While calling on officers of the Corps to remain calm and law abiding, the Commandant assured the public that, like the 'Freedom of Information Act', the Peace Corps Bill, which has already been passed by the National Assembly, would be assented to, sooner than later.

GOV. AYADE COMMENDS FEDERAL GOV’T INTERVENTION IN CURBING FLOOD & EROSION MENACE AT UNICAL

By Kingsley Agim

The State Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade has commended the Federal Government's intervention in constructing erosion and flood control works at the University of Calabar to curb the menace that has hitherto troubled the University Community.

Governor Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong, gave the commendation during the commissioning and handing-over of the University of Calabar Erosion and Flood Control Works on 25th May, 2018 in Calabar.

The Governor pointed out that with the kind of heavy downpour that Calabar is known for and the problems erosion and flooding have caused the University environment, the Federal Government's gesture of constructing the flood and erosion control works could not have been more timely.

Senator Ayade expressed delight in the Federal Government's keen interest in Cross River State, recalling that Cross River was the very first State Mr. President visited for the groundbreaking of the Super Highway, adding that the government and good people of Cross River are happy with his goodwill towards State.

Governor Ayade also expressed appreciation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Boss Mustapha for inviting him to witness the epoch-making occasion.

Commissioning the Project, the representative of President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who is the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology stated that the laudable project was to make for a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in the University.

The Honourable Minister further stated that the project, which was completed four months ago, was intended to channel waste and flood water into a safe discharge point, thereby preventing erosion and flooding and environmental degradation in the University Community.

Dr. Onu said the Flood and Erosion Control Project at the University of Calabar, executed by the Ecological Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the federation (OSGF), is one of eighteen across the federation.

Conveying the President's goodwill to the people, Dr. Onu expressed joy at every opportunity of being in Cross River State, recalling his fond memories as an alumnus of Mary Knoll, Okuku – Yala, and having come from a region that was then under the Ogoja Province.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Zana Akpagu expressed delight at the Federal Government intervention, which he said has brought relief to the menace of flooding and erosion that has hitherto beset the University community, describing the event as a "happy day for everyone at the University of Calabar."

Prof. Akpagu expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that, as an alumnus of the University, his fellow alumni are happy and very much identify with his laudable programmes.

The University Don also remarked that as a way of keying into the President's anti-graft crusade, the University of Calabar is the first and only institution offering compulsory anti-corruption courses in conjunction with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
