The State Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade has commended the Federal Government's intervention in constructing erosion and flood control works at the University of Calabar to curb the menace that has hitherto troubled the University Community.
Governor Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong, gave the commendation during the commissioning and handing-over of the University of Calabar Erosion and Flood Control Works on 25th May, 2018 in Calabar.
The Governor pointed out that with the kind of heavy downpour that Calabar is known for and the problems erosion and flooding have caused the University environment, the Federal Government's gesture of constructing the flood and erosion control works could not have been more timely.
Senator Ayade expressed delight in the Federal Government's keen interest in Cross River State, recalling that Cross River was the very first State Mr. President visited for the groundbreaking of the Super Highway, adding that the government and good people of Cross River are happy with his goodwill towards State.
Governor Ayade also expressed appreciation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Boss Mustapha for inviting him to witness the epoch-making occasion.
Commissioning the Project, the representative of President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who is the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology stated that the laudable project was to make for a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in the University.
The Honourable Minister further stated that the project, which was completed four months ago, was intended to channel waste and flood water into a safe discharge point, thereby preventing erosion and flooding and environmental degradation in the University Community.
Dr. Onu said the Flood and Erosion Control Project at the University of Calabar, executed by the Ecological Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the federation (OSGF), is one of eighteen across the federation.
Conveying the President's goodwill to the people, Dr. Onu expressed joy at every opportunity of being in Cross River State, recalling his fond memories as an alumnus of Mary Knoll, Okuku – Yala, and having come from a region that was then under the Ogoja Province.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Zana Akpagu expressed delight at the Federal Government intervention, which he said has brought relief to the menace of flooding and erosion that has hitherto beset the University community, describing the event as a "happy day for everyone at the University of Calabar."
Prof. Akpagu expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that, as an alumnus of the University, his fellow alumni are happy and very much identify with his laudable programmes.
The University Don also remarked that as a way of keying into the President's anti-graft crusade, the University of Calabar is the first and only institution offering compulsory anti-corruption courses in conjunction with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
