The Cross River State House of Assembly, in accordance with it's House Rules, released names of standing Committees for the second Legislative Year of the 9th Assembly.
Announcing the names of Committees at Plenary, Speaker, Rt Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams, Charged Members to take their oversight function more seriously, noting that the first Legislative Year of the 9th Assembly, Committees were not committed in carring out oversight duties.
Willams maintained that any Committee that is not ready to perform above board will be change, adding that all Committee Chairmen and thier Deputies must ensure effective oversights, as names of MDAs are attached to all Committees to identify area of responsibility as well as guidelines for perfect oversight duties.
The Speaker, also announced minor changes in the Committees, to include, the Member Odukpani State Constituency, Hon. Francis Asuquo, who was Chairman Committee on Information, now take over Committee on Lands, Housing and New Cities Development, while Hon. Francis Ovat, Obubura II State Constituency, is now Chairman, Committee on information and Orientation.
Other changes include, Hon. Sunday Achunekang Obanliku State Constituency , vice Chairman, Education Committee and Rt. Hon. Charles Ekpe, to Deputies Committee on land.
Williams adds that all other Committees formation are maintained.
The House also took the first reading of the bill to provide for "Cross River State Radio and Television Licensing Rates bill 2020"
Meanwhile, the House received Members of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, led by Hajiya Hadiza Sai Kangiuda, a board member of CISLAC
The team explain that they came to Cross River House of Assembly, on advocacy, adding that CISLAC has been "engaging in policy and Legislative advocacy at both the Federal and State levels" with a view to seeking "enactment and adoption of several Laws in the areas of Anti Corruption, Democratic governance, peace and Security as well as Human development, Conservation of Environment and health.
She noted that CISLAC is the Transparency International in the Country and remain a Frontline Civil Society Organization, which provides technical assistance to both the National and State Assemblys and other Government Agencies.
The team Leader summited that their advocacy to the 9th Assembly, is on Tobacco, as delivered by Dr Peter Unekwueojo, which has been ascribed as highest contributor to death related non- communicable diseases, most of which are preventable, adding that World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated each year's death, to Tobacco and about 6 million and about 10% deaths of 600,000 deaths occuring, as a result of non smokes, due to second hand smoking.
The House there after adjourned to another Legislative sitting.
