CRSPHCDA DG, Dr Betta Edu Advocates Against High Level of Staff Absenteeism in Ogoja PHCs.

The Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu has said that continuous ignoring of staff absenteeism with out imposing severe penalties would lead to decay of the health system. 

The DG who paid an unscheduled visit to 4 Primary health care centers in Ogoja between 8am and 9am on Saturday morning (25/8/2018) was completely devastated when she met the facilities open but saw no staff in them. 

The DG who just completed tour of health facilities in Abi where she met all staff on ground was disappointed when she tried same unscheduled visit in Ogoja.

In the inspection, she said is part of a mid-term review of various interventions, implementation and the impact evaluation of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Agency activities  and programs.

Dr Edu who was very unimpressed with the healthcare service delivery and management of Modern Comprehensive Health Center at Ogoja said disciplinary actions will be taken against erring staff of the facilities for abandoning it for their personal business to the detriment of the community.

She also observed that the other facilities was bedecked with numerous  challenges ranging from lack of skilled personnel, basic essential drugs, inappropriate drug storage facility, poor hygiene, low  Morale and  poor work ethics bordering on absenteeism.

She noted that appropriate measures will be taken to curb the situation and the PHCs that need renovation will be worked on. According to her two of such facilities were pinpoint at Abi LGA.

However, she said with the Decentralised Facility Financing (DFF) remains the best financing model for Primary Health Centres (PHCs) if Nigeria must achieve health for all by the year 2020 when adopted would take into consideration the peculiarity of each community PHCs. This, she said would encourage the people to own the facility, identify with it and make it work. 

Other facilities inspected by the DG included PHC Ibalebo, PHC Adadama respectively. The visit was a step by the Agency to make PHCs functional in rural areas.
