GOV. AYADE SALUTES SACRIFICES OF FALLEN HEROES TO FATHERLAND

By Kingsley Agim/Ekanem Faith

Cross River State Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade has saluted the nation's fallen heroes for the ultimate sacrifices to keep Nigeria as a sovereign and indivisible entity.

Governor Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong, gave the commendation during the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Thanksgiving Service held at Saint Bernard's Catholic Church, Marian Hill, Calabar.

The Governor, who had earlier taken the first reading from the book of Isaiah 40 vs. 1-5, 9-11, charged Nigerians to ensure the sustenance of peaceful coexistence by avoiding inciting, provocative, hateful actions and speeches, while reiterating observance of the rule of law, equity and transparent adherence to the doctrine of separation of powers.

He further quipped that the nation's diversity in culture, language, religion and general disposition should aggregate into enviable unity that wards off war and dissentions.

He also called on Nigerians to demonstrate appreciation to the noble sacrifices of our fallen or disabled heroes and their families by showing empathy and assistance wherever the necessity presents.

Governor Ayade concluded with a call on Cross Riverians to reciprocate the sacrifices of our heroes and sustain our democracy by ensuring that the forthcoming general elections are violence free, in line with his principle of 'politics with ethics.'

In his homily, the Parish Priest, Reverend Father Charles Etim, admonished Nigerians to embrace peace, love and respect for constituted authority and one another.

Rev. Etim solicited prayers for the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and called on governments at various levels to support, provide and improve the welfare of retired personnel and families of deceased military officers, as the nation commemorates the sacrifices of the fallen heroes.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Cross Rive State Council, Captain Joseph Offiong (Rtd.), appealed for support in getting a guess house for ex-service men who will be coming in from other parts of the State for medical attention; and a mess for social activities of the Legion.

Prayers were offered for peaceful forthcoming elections, the Armed Forces, retired military personnel, families of deceased military men, the Cross River State and nation – Nigeria.
