Immasco Alumni Association Clocks 25

Immaculate Conception Seminary, Mfamosing Alumni Association has clocked 25 years.

The Association is made up of old boys of Immaculate Conception Seminary, Mfamosing located in Akamkpa local government area of Cross River State.

The School which is best described as a "minor seminary" was founded in 1972 by the late Catholic Archbishop of Calabar, His Grace. Most. Rev. Dr. Brian D. Usanga for the stimulation of interest as well as formation of growing boys to the sacred priesthood.

Over the years, the dream and labour of the founding father can never be said to be in vain as several priests spread across different dioceses, congregations and missionary societies around the world are thoroughbred products of this minor seminary.

There are also laymen of different professions; Law, Medicine, Journalism, Architecture, Engineering, to name but a few who had their secondary education in this seminary.

In order to foster unity & most importantly give back to the school that made them, 25 years ago, precisely in the year 1994, some old boys of the school came together to form the Alumni Association.

Twenty-five years down the lane, the association has not only fostered unity, oneness and togetherness but has given and is still giving back to the seminary.

To further consolidate on the good the Association has stood for over the years, old boys have decided to build a befitting Secretariat as a meeting point and for administrative duties but that will be after a thanksgiving mass in gratitude to God who has brought them this far.

Besides, there will be unveiling of the Association's new blazer as well as conferment of awards to some distinguished old boys and some parents who had sacrificially sponsored two, three and more of their children through the school.

11am: Holy mass at St. Joseph Parish, Esuk Utan, off harbour junction, Calabar.

12 noon: Unveiling of blazer, launching for the building of Alumni Secretariat & conferment of awards...

All old boys at home and at diaspora are enjoined to partake in the events. Parents, stakeholders as well as public spirited individuals are invited to contribute to the success of the celebration.

Ukam Ngwu advocate for combination of pictorial / text health warnings on cigarette packs in Nigeria

A Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Cross River University of Technology, Calabar, *Barr. Ukam I. Ngwu* has called on the Federal Government and Ministry of Health to consider urgent introduction and implementation of  pictorial / text combined health warnings on cigarette packs and other tobacco products nationwide in line with global best practices.

According him rotational pictures or graphics depicting the dangers of smoking and different health complications and deaths associated with tobacco use will more effectively communicate and discourage smoking in the country as well as help in addressing the impending illiteracy barriers among smoking and nonsmoking population as compared to the current ineffective Text-Only warnings in use.

The Scholar who have most of his research works and publications in the field of Health Communication, Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) and Development Communication lamented the continued used of Text-Only warnings on cigarette packs, despite the increased in cardiovascular, lung and respiratory diseases and several types of cancers linked to tobacco use in the country.

Ukam I. Ngwu, who recently defended his PhD in Mass Communication at the University of Uyo said his PhD research was on the *'Influence of Cigarette Packs Health Warnings on Residents of Cross State'.* According to him, he was surprised to discover that all cigarette packages in use in the study area were having plain texted anti smoking warnings and did not accommodate large illiterate smoking population especially as the state was considered one of the educational less developed states in Nigeria. More disturbing was the inclusion of other captivating and smoking encouraging words by cigarette manufacturers on the packs like: 'Menthol Boost', 'Boost the Experience', 'Taste the Extra Menthol, Experience the unique rich and smooth taste of Rothmans. True to our highest quality standards for more than 125 years', etc which negates the intention of policy makers, creates conflict situation and dissonance among smokers, as such undermining and posing a great threat to the anti-smoking fight in the country.

The Learned Health Communicator bewail the country backwardness in efforts to dissuade and reduce tobacco use as well as exposure to same through second-hand smoking as compared to other climes like Canada, USA, India etc. This is however despite several warnings and researches on the health implications of tobacco. For instance, the World Lungs Foundation (2015) estimated about 1 billion deaths in 21st century due to smoking. Also the WHO (2008;2013) reported that about 5.4 million persons die annually as result of smoke related diseases and cancers. A ratio of one in every ten adult deaths and warn that if smoking pattern continues unabated, this figures may rise to 8million by 2030.

It is unfortunate that hitherto, manufacturers of tobacco products still use Text-Only warning that: "The Federal Ministry of Health warns that smokers are liable to die young" since inception in 1990 when the 'Tobacco Smoking (Control) Decree promulgated. This inscription is not only stale, ineffective but also deficient and incapable of discouraging the act of smoking among chain smokers.

The outcome of the research reveals that these health warnings are only effective in reducing smoking initiation among nonsmokers but not good enough to discourage smokers as most of them ignore it to engage more in the act of smoking in deviance and protest.

Findings from research also reveal the poor implementation of the National Tobacco (Control) Act, 2015 in the area of study which is most likely the same case all over the country. Hitherto cigarette are being sold or retailed in sticks instead of packs and people still smoke in public places in violation of this law. Most law enforcement officers are also defaulters, hence making a set back for the anti smoking fight as most smokers do not even have the opportunity to see the warnings on the packs.

Several recommendations were made from the findings of the study including the full implementation and enforcement of the National Tobacco (Control) Act, 2015 to see to the speedy conviction of defaulters and the combined use of discouraging pictorial and text warnings on all tobacco products as well as increased sensitisation of the public against smoking and more effective programmes to help smokers quit.

Ben Ayade, on Thursday, November 7, 2019, to shepherd the academia of the institution. Professor Ogar, unveil his vital five (5) point agenda's in simplicity at the handing-over ceremony  for the Immediate Past Ag. VC Professor (Mrs) Akon Monday Joshua, MNAE to the newly appointed Ag. VC Prof. Ogar David Abua which held at the Cross River University of Technology, Senate Chamber on Wednesday, November 13 2019.

In present, At the handing-over ceremony was the Outgoing VC, Prof, (Mrs). Akon Monday Joshua, MNAE, Incoming Ag. VC; Prof. Ogar David Abua, The Registrar; Mr Gabriel Beshel, The Bursar; Mr. Ekpe I. Ekpe, The Librarian; Prof. Williams, Director of MIS; Dr. Mrs. Etta Hannah Edim,  Director for  Medical Services, Director of Academic Planning, Deans of Faculties, Head of Departments and SUG Official's.

Professor Ogar, said, all this i mentioned can't be accomplished without funding and i will not be able to give all full details on how i will accomplish this as this is not a speech making day, but i have been interacting with top governing council in this great institution for the past few days and i have very sound knowledge of what have been happening now and its previous. However, all this will be accomplish through our collective interest of "we"- everyone of us".

He further advice, the management to look inwards to explore opportunities in the institution as over 18, 996 populance can generate a huge revenue for the University to actualize this proposed project's.

Ogar speaking, "I believe we have the intellectual capacity and facilities to improvise the setting of this institution. I will be visiting the Obubra campus to see what they have produced thus far, in the Faculty of Agriculture. We cannot have a University with Faculty of Agriculture and can't produce common Proteinous egg for nourishable consumption". He said.

He added, "With the populace of this great University we'll gear our internal revenue establishing factory's and utilizing the students to practicalize their profession and to promote our citadel of learning".
Continuing, It is expected that undergraduates in wood production can furnish their lecturers and fellow students with chairs, Hospitality/Home Economic undergraduates can grants the management cake's and choppy on occasions. More so, our factory can provide us with table waters on a ceremony like this" Ogar said.

David Peter, noted the University Managements, Governing Councils, Dignitaries and invited guest on the occasion. In present, on the handing-over ceremony was the Outgoing VC, Prof, (Mrs). Akon Monday Joshua, MNAE, Incoming Ag. VC; Prof. Ogar David Abua, The Registrar; Mr Gabriel Beshel, The Bursar; Mr. Ekpe I. Prof Akon speaking, "Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) from inception in September, 2002 has a PAST, a PRESENT and a FUTURE. The past of CRUTECH has been documented by the past Vice-Chancellor, the present is being presented by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Akon Monday Joshua today, while the future will start today as i handover to Professor Ogar, David Abua for the next three (3) months", Akon said.


 Akon, further allot galactic encomium on  down-to-earth personalities for their support throughout the six months she served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor which were filled with grave challenges.

Prof. Akon shows gratitude, "Permit me ladies and gentlemen to thank God Almighty for His "DIVINE MAPPING" in my life when on the 7th of May 2019, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Professor) Ben Ayade appointed me the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), for three (3) months, and later added another three (3) months, making it six (6) months, Your Excellency, Sir, thank you and God bless you richly".

Continuing, "I wish to use this time also to thank the Governing Council Chairman, and Members of Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students for all their support throughout the six months. In all, God helped us, and today, the 2018/2019 academic session has ended in peace. God bless everyone", Akon expressed.

I am not an outsider, i am close to CRUTECH and was a lecturer at Obubra campus, Faculty of Agriculture as previously called University of Cross River, most of my adjourned was done in CRUTECH as an outstanding University. My coming here is to work as a team and we have all the resources for this". He said.

Prof. Ogar, shun lecturers who collect sorting from students to pass exams, fraudulent acts of nonpayment of fees and cultism practice's on campuses.

"I believe we have the  intellectual capacity and facilities to improvise the setting of this institution.  Students relies on our responsibility for us ensuring a standard environment for their studies and comfortable environment for living. And, The aspects of sorting don't try sorting i wouldn't unleash the measures to nab defaulters in this ceremony because of the visitors in our midst the strategies are already in place before this day and we are set for implementation. More so, the security of this great institution is my keen ipriority therefore, cultist amend their ways rightly as smart tech security will be launch to curb illicit act on campuses, We are going to look inward". He said.

Prof. David, heartily thank all the management's, Governing Councils, Staffs, Students foreseeing the great hope and future of the institution..

"I Once again, thank God Almighty for giving me the privilege to address you all, The Governing Council, Management of this great University, Staffs, SUG officials and Students, but most importantly my vision driven Governor, His Excellency, Sen. Prof. Sir. Benedict Ayade for giving me this opportunity thank you very much", He ended.

In commemoration of the World Pneumonia Day, the Society for Health Enlightenment Initiative (SO-HEALTHI), a non-governmental organisation, yesterday, joined the Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia to  fight PNEUMONIA, the number one  killer of children under 5 years old.

Speaking at the event, the NGO's Team Lead, Barr. (Mrs.) RoseMary Archibong, stated that SO-HEALTHI was borne out of passion to contribute to health awareness creation and interventions, while adding a literary component to its activities to encourage creative writing, with this year's edition held in the Conference Hall of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar.

Mrs. Archibong said SO-HEALTHI has in ten years  strengthened advocacy and created awareness about Pneumonia - a treatable and preventable disease, which according to the United Nations, has killed more children from 0-5 years than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined.

According to un.org, "Nigeria has seen the worst of the problem, with 162, 000 child pneumonia deaths in the last year – that’s an astonishing 443 on average, each day. India is India is not far behind at 127, 000, Pakistan at 58, 000, the Democratic Republic of Congo at 40, 000, and 32, 000 deaths in Ethiopia."

"These five countries alone were responsible for more than half of the lives pneumonia claimed in 2018." 

"The disease can be prevented with immunization, and easily treated with low-cost antibiotics if properly diagnosed, but tens of millions of children are still going unvaccinated."

"Globally, 32 per cent of children suspected of having pneumonia are not taken to a health facility, and the number rises to 40 per cent in poor and low-income countries."

The well attended event featured lecture presentations on Pneumonia, it's causes and prevention by Dr. Genevieve Barnaby of the AyadeCare Home Healthcare and Dr. Effioanwan Archibong, a Registrar at UCTH.

A special goodwill message was given by Associate Professor Atana Ewa, who commended SOHEALTHI for her consistency, noting that she has been with the NGO from her pioneer outing on PNEUMONIA in 2009.

Seven select Secondary Schools, namely Word of Promise High School, Holy Trinity College, Margaret Ekpo Secondary School, Seven Angels University Secondary School, Community Secondary School, Ikot Ewa, Akpabuyo, Aye High School and Government Secondary School, Akim, all in Calabar took part in the 2019 edition of  SO-HEALTHI Essay Competition on Pneumonia.

The Essay Competition, with the topic "Pneumonia: Causes and Prevention," saw little Eyong Praise of Margaret Ekpo Secondary School, clinched the the first prize, while Michael Iyechukwu Austin of Seven Angels University Secondary School and Abigail Eyo Hogan of Government Secondary School, Akim, came second and third respectively.

Consolation prizes also went to Loveth Abit - Word of Promise High School; Paul Liyel Bassey - Holy Trinity College; Princess Nathaniel - Aye High School; and Timothy Solomon Akpan of Community Secondary School, Ikot Ewa.

The State House of Assembly has commenced the process of amending the law establishing the State University with a view to changing the institutions nomenclature from Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) to University of Cross River State.

A  Majority of the lawmakers voted  for the second reading of the bill tagged, University of Cross River State   Bill 2019 after which it was committed to the House Committee on Education for indepth
study with a mandate to report back in a forth night.

Peter Odey who sponsored the bill, made a strong case for the proposed amendment arguing that there was urgent need to repeal the existing law and change the institution from a University of Technology to a conventional University.

Meet Prof. (Mrs) Adaobi Obasi, First Female Vice Chancellor, Imo State University Owerri

Professor Victoria Adaobi Obasi was born to the Family of Chief Fred and Ezinne Felicia Nnoham of Ogboko, Ideato South Local Government Area, of Imo State. She is married to Sir Chief Charles Obasi, a Chartered Quantity Surveyor of Dim-Na-Nume Isu, Nwangele Local Government Area and they are blessed with Children.

She had her Primary Education at Holy Rosary Primary School, Oguta. She gained admission into Holy Rosary Secondary School, Ihioma Orlu and came out in flying colours in 1971. She proceeded to the Prestigious Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri for her Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) and completed her Youth Service in 1981.

Her unquenchable thirst for academic excellence saw her enrolling into the famous University of Hull England where She obtained B.A. (Ed) 1984, M.A 1985 and capped it with a Ph.D. in 1989.

She has authored many books and journal articles in reputable National and International Journals.

As a Scholar par excellence and repute, she won the University of Hull Bursary award for excellence for three consecutive times during Her Ph.D programme.

 Her effective academic productivity, dignity and decorum never went unnoticed by Imo State Government who appointed her Commissioner for Education and later Commissioner for Local Government and Rural Development.

She was elected the best Commissioner of the year 2012 in Imo State. She is today a Member of the Nigerian Academy of Education (MNAE), Fellow of the Curriculum Organization of Nigeria (FCON), a Fellow of the Gender Studies Association of Nigeria (FGSAN), a Member of Senate, External Examiner to many Universities and other Higher Institutions etc.

It is sincerely painful that the road, awarded to the construction firm, John Davis Construction Company in 2012 by the Liyel Imoke administration, was POORLY done. I have recently been lobbying a few of my highly placed friends to help capture this road contract and have it successfully executed. Please let me not mention their names here so I do not jeopardise a process already in place.

Secondly, a nine class room block, staff room, reception and sixteen toilets, are presently under construction in the Agoi Ibami Secondary School. I have attached photographs and can humbly tell you that as at this evening, work on the building has reached window level. Feel free to cross check this information with the reliable sources I know you always have on hand.

The wife of the Executive Governor of Cross River State Her Excellency Dr Linda Ayade has charged parents to instill/enforce discipline on their children even while loving them. Speaking during the *6th LAFARGE AFRICA NATIONAL LITERACY COMPETITION*, an event which had in attendance many important dignitaries like the Emir of Kano HRM Sanusi Lamido, Deputy Governor of Ogun State; Her Excellency Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the wives of the Ogun State and Gombe State Governors; Dr Mrs Olufunso Amosun and Hajiya Asma'u Yahaya, the Minister of Education; Mallam Adamu Adamu who was ably represented, the Chairman of LAFARGE; Mr Mobalaji Balogun, Competitors from six different States and their teachers and a host of others.

Her Excellency expressed her satisfaction for being part of an event graced by important dignitaries who've all gathered to celebrate children who have come to compete and show case their talents in pronunciation and spelling forms which has today formed the bedrock of learning in any language. She thanked and appreciated LAFARGE for their continued sponsorship of the values and literacy which has remained the key driver of sustainable development while helping to deviate from the disturbing trend where organization has placed a huge sum on price money for winners of games and pageantry based on luck and natural beauty rather than the mental prowess.

The Wife of the Governor explained great strides achieved by her husband in the educational sector in the state with renovation of several primary schools building of model schools and even upgrading the quality of learning while employing several teachers to offer quality education to children. She said she will continue to support the literacy competition in the state as part of strategic move by Mediatrix Development Foundation to improve education.

Williams, announced that a committee to look into the matter will be constituted immediately and will be headed by the leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, some labour leaders as well as Members of the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Pettitions and public Service Matters to commence investigation into the matter.

Earlier, the spoke person for the group, who is also the State Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Polytechnics, Comrade, Emmanuel Enyogu, said, up to five Tertiary Institutions in the State are affected and over 150 staff across College of Health Technology, Association of Senior Staff Association of Polytechnics and Association of Colleges of Education Staff and their none Academic bodies are involved.

Comrade Enyogu, noted that the reason for the protest is to establish that the names of the affected Staff be returned back to the Payroll, while the Audit exercise continue.
The spoke person prayed the Governor, Sir, Sen. Prof. Ben. Ayade to recall all affected Staff and as well reinstate them to reduce the suffering.

Cally Air: Upheave Cross River State IGR fortune in challenging skies

Challenges facing the aviation sector notwithstanding, the Cross Rivers State Government, is set to sky rock its state-own airline.

Governor Ben Ayade, will be floating an airline, “Cally Air’’, the state government has completed plans to pilots its own airline as well as an airlifts line, as part of its tourism investment drive, efforts to increase revenue and lower dependence on federal allocation.


Governor Ayade acknowledge that, Cross River is creating a new platforms, new business opportunities that “will open a fresh horizon for young people to exploits”. He added, "it would increase the state Internally Generated Revenue and also generate employment opportunities for teaming unemployed youths in the state".


_David Peter Interviewing,_ Hon. Alhaji Hassan Tanimu, Chairman, Cross River State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, he expressed his galactic  efforts towards attaining the limelight of Cally air skyrocketing.


Alhaji Hassan speaking, "I, treasure the Executive Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Ben Ayade, for his intellectual capacity and industrial driven evidence to channel the state invest on aviation to help boost the state IGR as we are optimistic to launch  -Cally Air".


Hassan said, "I have contacted the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for an Airlift agreement to airlifts South South and South East Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia and the quarterly Umrah activities".


On the interview, David Peter further asked, "Are there specific routes that have already been penciled down as the airline resumes operation? _Hassan,  responded in the affirmative “Yes._


"Initially, Cally Air will ply to Lagos, Abuja and even weekly flight to Malabor and Yaounde as this will leg up the state revenue" He said.


The Governor, Ben Ayade, who's optimism that the  state will become an industrial hub and lodestone on tourism and investors as keen a strong interest in the Airlift of South South/South East Pilgrims.


The Acting Chairman, CRS Muslim Pilgrims, Tanimu Hassan, distinct that, he shared reasonable values with Engr. Goni, The Director of Aviation, NAHCON, were he already assured the Cross River State Government on the possibilities in reference to the interest as desired.


On the peak to foster, Cross River State IGR, Alhaji Hassan, spoke with Mohammed D. Musa, Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, to operate the Calabar airport for airlifts as an addition. Hassan was advised to inform His Excellency, Ben Ayade to discuss with Alhaji Yadudu, MD FAAN for an airlift as it will ameliorate the state IGR pending the completion of the Obudu International Airport" Yadudu said.


The idea behind the tourists’ Programme (Calabar Carnival), South South and South East Pilgrims airlifts is to intensely market the state as the ideal destination for all tourism, social and corporate events, while also offering superior leisure activities. Cally Air is here to provide the much needed capacity, as well as ease of access to facilitate both the visitors and industrialisation programmes of the state.


With the airline now to be in place, the airport becomes hugely more viable, the MRO facility gets activated and Cross River State is well positioned to become the “centre of excellence” in the air transport industry in Nigeria.”


Justifying government’s decision to venture on  Bakassi Deep seaport- Maritime and Cally Airline, Professor Ayade reasoned that with the seaport trade and connectivity along the region, his administration is confident that the return on the investment would definitely be huge and contribute immensely to the budget of infinite transposition.
