ARCHIBONG LAUDS GOV. AYADE’S LABOUR-FRIENDLY DISPOSITION … URGES NLC-AFFILIATES TO SUPPORT GOVERNMENT

By Kingsley Agim

Cross River Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong has commended the disposition of Governor Ben Ayade towards the welfare of workers in the State.
Mrs. Archibong gave the commendation when she declared open the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers union (RATTAWU), Cross River State Council's 9th Triennial State Delegate Conference, held yesterday, at the NLC Solidarity House, Calabar.

The Commissioner, who thanked Governor Ayade for facilitating the speedy construction and completion of the ultra-modern secretariat (NLC Solidarity House) for the State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, also stated that the Governor's inclination towards a robust and better workforce in Cross River has been orchestrated through prompt and regular payment of salaries and the entrenchment of employment of thousands of Cross Riverians; a feat which has earned him (Gov. Ayade) the Best Labour Friendly Governor Award.

She also lauded the Comrade John Ushie-led State NLC for its synergy and cordial relationship with the government, a situation she maintained, has made for a productive and prosperous Cross River State.

Declaring the event open, the Information and Orientation boss used the opportunity to call on all Labour-affiliated bodies to continue to be supportive of the policies, programmes and activities of the Ayade-led administration, which she said, are aimed at charting a new course of industrialization for economic prosperity of the State.

Mrs. Archibong congratulated the out-gone leadership of RATTAWU for a successful tenure of office, and also charged the in-coming executives to borrow a leaf from Governor Ayade's mantra of 'politics with ethics' by putting the interest of the Union first.

She made the call while flagging off the Second Round Maternal Neonatal Tetanus Elimination Campaign which targets women of child bearing ages between 15-49 years in Akamkpa Local Government Area on Tuesday.

According to her, the State Governor, Senator. Prof Ben Ayade is very concerned about elimination of neonatal tetanus and will continue give his unalloyed support. She noted that this signify a call to action to ensure elimination of neonatal tetanus.

She insisted that tetanus continues to thrive because of poor ANC attendance, high rate of delivery with TBAs and other unskilled birth attendants who use old contaminated razor blades or unsterilise object to cut the umbilical cord; warning that the state will not tolerate such insolence henceforth from unskilled birth attendance.

Earlier, Head of Local Government Administration Akamkpa, Mr Bassey Efiom said the essence of the exercise is to make sure the mother and the child are in good health.  He specially thanked the state governor, Commissioner and DG for their continuous support to primary healthcare across the state.

Mrs. Archibong lamented that the sector is yet to recover from the recent demise of late Oshega Abang, Director News and is facing the trauma occasioned by the kidnap of Mr Petertex Etim, a News Presenter.

PRESS RELEASE

The attention of the Cross River State Command of  Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the alleged arrest of one of its personnel, Eyo Bassey EYO and his subsequent parade by the Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad of the Nigeria Police in Calabar, Cross River State over suspected kidnap.

The Command wishes to state that this is a misrepresentation of what happened. The fact is that EYO had accompanied three (3) of his friends namely Eyo EDET, Sylvia JAMES and Jason UDO to assist them recover a debt from Robert BASSEY.

Investigation has revealed that BASSEY had fleeced the trio of EDET, JAMES and UDO of a certain sum of money with a promise to help them secure admission at the University of Calabar.

But  when BASSEY could not fulfil his obligation, they demanded a refund of the money which he had defaulted severally.

BAKASSI ELDERS CONDEMN ATTACK ON STATE SECURITY ADVISER … WANT PERPETRATORS PROSECUTED

By Kingsley Agim

In the wake of the gruesome attack and assassination attempt on the State Security Adviser – South, Hon. Ani Esin at his residence in the Akai Efa area of Calabar Municipality, the Elders and opinion leaders of Bakassi have condemned the heinous act and want perpetrators brought to book.

The elders made known during a press briefing on Thursday, held at Ekpiri Ikang, Bakassi Local Government Area.

A statement signed by the elders and delivered by Hon. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, Member Representing Bakassi in the Cross River State House of Assembly, read: "We, as leaders of the Bakassi people strongly condemn this gruesome attack and the criminal attempt to take the life of a Community Leader and Public Servant with a rich pedigree of service and positive interventions for the cause of Bakassi and indeed the State."

"Whatever the motive of these criminals, we call on the security agencies to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. We again urge the Police, DSS and indeed, other security forces in the State to speedily bring these miscreants to justice, to serve as a deterrent to others and nip in the bud the trending impression of an uptick in crime rate in the State."

The elders maintained that such a dastardly act was designed to silence Hon. Ani Esin for his principled stand for truth on issues concerning Bakassi and the politics of Cross River State.

The elders commended the prompt intervention of His Excellency, Governor Ben Ayade, which they maintained, gives them confidence that there is light at the end of the tunnel of this investigation.

The statement was jointly signed by Hon. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, Member Representing Bakassi in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. WHY RT. HON. ETENG JONES DESERVE THE CRSHA SPEAKERSHIP-- DetailingCrossRiver

"... That men and women may think, for the lifespan of propaganda is short, and even shorter is the lifespan of falsehood"

These were the words of Professor Chris Mustapha Jnr.

Failure is an orphan and no sane follower of the CRSHA polity and politics will contest the patriotism, the veracity and sincerity that underline the active participation of Rt. Hon. Eteng Jones in the floor of the house.

As house committee chairman on finance budget and appropriation and deputy leader CRSHA, truth be told, he is well acquainted with the leadership of the house and well experienced to handle the gavel rightly.

He was closed to being independent, never was he missing in sponsoring and cosponsoring of bills despite being saddled with weighty responsibilities. And will not in totality give in to the whims of the governor if doing so will tarnish his integrity.

This must have prick the conscience of men and women of goodwill who believed that legislative activities is an avenue to fan personal gains rather than active democratic representation which E.J. Williams represents.

Rt. Hon. Jones, has never been accused of being a rubber stamp chairman and Deputy house leader. His diligent and diplomatic qualities should not be mistaken to mean not having the interests of house members at heart.

Jones will make a difference, by improving in those areas Speaker John Gaul was falling short of.

To Hon. Mathew Olory, Hon. Hillary Bisong, I have read of your giant strides as  house members but the time is not yet ripe for the pendulum of speakership to swing to you. Allow the zoning formula which Cross River state politics is noted for and you will never regret you did.

Support the transition of speakership to Rt. Hon. Jones from Speaker Gaul and history will be made.

Interestingly, his speakership will be a fecund and a foray of digitalized developments owing to his leadership records.

IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS IT WILL BE TOO DANGEROUS TO BE A POLITICIAN

BY DOMINIC KIDZU

After I read Dele Momodu's Open Letter to the Vice President and Reuben Abati's Nigeria 2019 : Notes From the Field, this morning,  I knew I was not travelling alone on this endless dead - end, in ruminations about the fate of my country.  I had mentioned to a friend on election day back in my village, Bunyia Irruan in Boki, Cross River State that in the next 10 years it will be too dangerous to be a politician.  It is a grim truth I have come to terms with based on the stark realities of the  nation today.

In the old days, we agreed as a community, on which political party we were going to support in each election, the day before the elections. The arguments were usually led by leaders of the opposing parties from  the area. In the end a decision was taken and agreed to by almost everyone.  On election day therefore, everyone knew which party they were going to vote for. And it was almost  natural that after voting all roads led to the Leaders home where plantain porridge with goat meat was being cooked by the womenfolk. Everybody ate their  belly - fulls and not a few kegs of palmwine and  cartons of beer were quaffed till late into the night.

Whereas the eve of election day meetings aggregated the interest of the community and which party best represented those aspirations, the after election convivialities presented the opportunity for requests that were more personal in form and nature.   And matters like  burial expenses,  farm inputs, assistance for  marriage or naming ceremonies were often made at these  occasions. Victory was usually communal and collective in the same way that the community felt and acted like one. All that is gone now. The 2019 general elections have signposted the death of innocence and heralded the beginning of election as warfare.

In my area, the youths became a political party of their own. Their aim was not to win elections for themselves or for anybody. Their aim was to win the cash by all means necessary. And they are very many, these youths. Hordes of them, many of them educated. Many of them not educated. All of them high on something. Alcohol,  marijuana, tramadol, you name it. They wore jeans trousers and funky tops, with a  little bag on their bossom, held together by a sling that dropped from their necks through their armpits. The side  bag usually had a bulge, and it was up to you to guess if there was a pistol in there or not. It wasn't however the most pleasant wager to make. And while the inevitable negotiations last, it was also inevitable that one had his left eye constantly focused on the bulge on the little bag.

They introduced themselves as "the  boys", even though one had known most of them all their lives. "The boys " are angry about being neglected by the system and all they are asking for is "settlement ". That is why they have snatched the election materials in all the polling units. Ofcourse the police orderly posted to the polling unit was standing there whilst the materials were being carted away. He is clearly more petrified than you. And his mind is frankly more on the honorarium the different party leaders will squeeze into his pocket on the sly. Negotiations will then ensue between the party leaders and the boys. In the end money changed  hands, the boys returned  the materials, voting continued, except for another little matter of cash before voting. The cartons of soap,  maggi, indomie and bags of salt and rice had been accepted. Those ones are safely in their kitchens. The old men and women. The young men and girls.  Everybody is asking you to give them money (cash money), before they proceeded to vote. You have very little left after rescuing the election materials with plenty of money. The die is cast! Welcome to the general elections of 2019. Welcome to the reality of Nigeria.

The governing APC lit the fire, the Vice President bore the torch, and now the conflagration is burning down the country. From Trader Money on the eve of the general elections to Tinubu billions, all shown on national television networks. The people watched and copied. The entire national moral fabric destroyed in one fell swoop by the desperation of  an inept and clueless gang of power mongers for the sake of power, money, and ethnic  supremacy. All the gains of education and civilization sacrificed on the altar of vanity. Even INEC and the Military could not be spared the haemorrhage. The shame of a country . You wonder why the Vice President endured the agony of school and legal education only to end up as a byword, mixed up in this  grime and putrifaction. The President threatened that election materials snatchers would be shot. The deputy governor of Kano did so, was arrested and is now released. Matter closed. The bandits are having a field day while the educated are crafting fitting theories to explain the travesties. I'm sure that even now, Sagae, Keyamu and Oshiomole have answers for every question.

The young ones are seeing us, and are learning. The youths now know that the route to greatness is not through education or hardwork. That was then. They know that the key to success is through might. The short answer is through violence. So they join cult groups at teen, while those who missed "the opportunity " in school now join at mid life. You have to belong. You have to carry the threat of violence . Otherwise you are going nowhere in politics. Academic excellence amounts to nothing. All that one needs today is money and the capacity for violence. This is the new Nigeria. This is the new reality. The youths had masters who bought guns for them. They have now dispensed with the masters, but have kept the guns. They are their own masters now, controlled by their hunger for food, alcohol and drugs. A revolution is brewing almost imperceptibly so across the country.  A revolution of the youths is on its way. It will consume all of us in its apocalypse. The regret is that it will not be driven by ideology. No, the revolution will be driven by joblessness, ignorance, hunger, alcohol and drugs. And this reality is almost upon us.

In the next ten years, you could hold up a bank, steal a  heap of Jack and run for President. Never mind about certificates or competence. With good money, arms and ammunition, you are halfway home. These youths will accept money and arms, and promptly murder their parents. Those who still cherish education, civility pedigree  and experience, should go find a job away from politics. Now my eyes too have opened, having seen enough to lead me to irrevocable despair.                                                   Now I believe Chinua Acebes' tale in  "There Was a Country" and Karl Maier's apocalyptic prognosis  about  the future of  Nigeria in his book "This House Has Fallen." It has indeed fallen and the rubble are strewn all about us.

BRAKING NEW'S!!! Keyamo Writes AU, EU, Over Atiku’s Refusal To Concede Defeat:

"We are writing to inform you of the undemocratic tendencies of the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, who has chosen to take the electoral process in Nigeria backward after a peaceful and credible presidential and National Assembly elections conducted penultimate Saturday.

"In spite of reports by foreign observers acknowledging the polls as free, fair and peaceful, the opposition party and its candidate have chosen to discredit the entire process and make the Observation Missions look as if they are biased in their assessment of the just concluded presidential poll.

"Apart from blatantly refusing to congratulate the winner of the said poll, President Muhammadu Buhari, the PDP and its candidate have taken the battle to court apparently to cause distractions with a view to slowing down the wheels of governance in the country.

"The PDP is still inciting the Nigerian public against the government of the day irrespective of the fact that President Buhari had been magnanimous in victory. He has pledged to run an all-inclusive government and has even urged us, his supporters, not to gloat or humiliate the opposition, an enjoinder we have adhered strictly to the letter.

"We deem it fit to draw your attention to this brazen attempt to frustrate the democratic process, hoping that you will intervene by calling the PDP and its presidential candidate to order and ensure that the tenets of democracy are adhered to in the ongoing electoral process in Nigeria.

"Atiku should follow former President Goodluck Jonathan's example. Nobody's life should be sacrificed for any politician's ambition. He should abide by the agreement signed by all presidential candidates with the National Peace Committee to accept the results of the just concluded presidential poll in good faith.

"Nigeria has, in the past witnessed enough shedding of the blood of innocent Nigerians. If Atiku wants to help Nigerians, he should work with the Buhari-led government for a prosperous nation. He should not set Nigeria aflame with his inordinate ambition and insatiable thirst for power."

Gov. Ayade tasks Yakurr LGA on bamboo farming As he commissions Paradise Toothpick Factory

By Kingsley Agim/David Ogbudu

The state Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade has called on the people of Yakurr Local Government Area of the State to venture into aggressive bamboo farming to sustain the toothpick factory and  improve  their socio-economic well-being.

Governor Ayade made the call while commissioning the state  toothpick factory yesterday, Thursday, in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area.

He said with the commissioning of the project, the factory would commence full production of toothpicks, hence the need to embark on bamboo farming to supply raw materials to the factory to enhance maximum production to meet the market demands.

Governor Ayade noted that his administration would continue to initiate projects that will impact positively on the lives of Cross Riverians.

According to  Governor Ayade, "the toothpicks industry would provide thousands of jobs to the people of Ekori and Yakurr at large," while urging them to guard and protect the factory from vandalization.

He also disclosed that Cross River State is the lowest in terms of Federal Revenue  Allocation, ranking number thirty five out of thirty six in allocation shearing formula, stressing that he is running a government with the lowest  amount of money in Nigeria, yet with the highest amount of debt.

The Governor however assured the people that his administration will in a short while address the erosion challenges faced by the people, as well as provide vehicles  for factory and the police station for easy distribution and policing.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs Rosemary Archibong said the factory which is in line with the Ayade-led administration's policy of 'one industry per Council Area' is a promise fulfilled.

The factory, she noted, will create jobs for the catchment area and bring economic development and growth into the rural communities.

In his address, the Obol Lopon of Ekori, Obol Donatus Ibor, thanked Governor Ayade's magnanimity in siting the factory in Ekori, which has engaged most youths in the area and pledged on behalf of the people to support Governor Ayade's re election bid.

The Obol Lopon of Ugep, Obol Ofem Ubanga said  the gesture will help the people to explore the raw materials that abound in the area for economic benefits.

The event which climaxed with the investiture of Governor Ayade with the traditional tittle of " _Obol Ojou Onong of Ekori,"_ meaning the 'Talk and Do Chief of Ekori,' also featured the rich cultural displays of the Yakurr Nation, with attendance from Members of the State Executive Council, Yakurr Traditional Rulers Council, among others.
