By Kingsley Agim The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Effiom Archibong has advised women in the State that a deepening of their spirituality should enhance their self-validation, boldness and self-confidence, which are ingredients for good decision making and a sine qua non for effective leadership. Mrs. Archibong made the assertion when she spoke at the WOMEN 2 WOMEN PLUS IMPACT CONFERENCE held recently at the Women Development Centre, Parliamentary Road, Calabar on the topic: Balancing Women’s Spiritual Life and Business Leadership. She posited that evidence shows that there is a Spiritual Gender Gap in that women embrace matters of faith more than men. They should therefore apply positively the benefits of their disciplined minds to quality leadership. She buttressed her submission with examples of Biblical women who were both deeply spiritual as well as notable leaders in different spheres of human endeavours with specific reference to Deborah who was commander-in-chief of Israel’s Armed Forces. Deborah, who, though also a prophetess, led the Israelite army to war when it was time for war, rather than stay back to pray. The Corps in her usual patriotic and progressive international relations, recently gained recognition through the Government of India (GOI). According to the Government, through the High Commission in Nigeria, 'this recognition is as a result of the Corps’ National Creativity, Peace and Youth Development programmes.' It would be recalled that the Government of India had organized a programme tagged India Technical Economic Cooperation (ITEC)/Special Commonwealth Assistance for Africa Programme (SCAAP) Scholarship through the Ministry of External Affairs of which the PCN Oyo State Commandant, Dr Oludare Adesina, was a beneficiary of the Indian Government’s Scholarship, the only participant from Nigeria. The event, which held between February 26th to March 9th, 2018, had the theme, 'Leadership Development Programme for Enhancing Public Service Delivery'. The scheme attracted 33 participants from 22 countries nay; Nigeria, Argentina, Tanzania, Russia, Georgia, Kenya, Indonesia, Ukraine, Vietnam and several others. Reacting to this development, the National Commandant of the Corps, Amb. (Dr) Dickson A.O. Akoh FCITr FCPA, FNSIS, commended the High Commission and Government of India for finding PCN worthy of recognition. He further stressed that such recognition will boost the morale of the organization in order to execute its mandate effectively. While celebrating the achievement, Amb. CRUTECH may shutdown over Govt refusal to fund accreditation - Alumni

by INYALI PETER Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) Alumni association has raised alarm that the institution may shutdown next month over the refusal of the State government to fund accreditation. President of the alumni association, Comrade Eyam Abeng, disclosed to newsmen in Calabar that the University is expecting accreditation team from National University Commission (NUC) next month but the government is yet to release a dine to prepare for the team. Abeng who accused the state Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade of spending money on endorsement rallies across the state at the detriment of the University quarrelled that even the loan taken for last accreditation by the university has not been cleared. While expressing his disappointment over the seeming government negligence, he called on well meaning Cross Riverians to help the institution persuade the Governor to release funds for the accreditation. He further revealed that the accreditation has been postponed twice due to paucity of funds adding that the last one was at the instance of the Governor who promised early release of funds to allow the university prepare but has now reneged on his promise as no funds has been released less than three weeks to the exercise. The President said that "15 out of about 28 undergraduate programmes will be undergoing NUC accreditation by April 2018 and at this point, the Visitor to the University and Governor of Cross River State has not released a dine to the University. "The accreditation has been rescheduled twice and the second time on the instance of the Governor. This 15 programmes cut across multiple faculties except the faculty of communication Technology. Some of the affected departments are Physiology, Biochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/ Electronics Engineering, Chemistry, Architecture, Physics etc. Should the university fail the accreditation, it will spell doom to the University as graduates of such departments will not proceed on NYSC and their certificates not recognized". He appealed that "We are calling on the good people of Cross River State to prevail on the Governor to do the needful as Education is the true bedrock of sustainable development and Growth of any society. The last accreditation was carried out on a loan which is yet to be paid in full. Our appeal is that the Governor who is a Professor should not neglect Education, the only antidote against poverty" While noting that N250Million is needed for the accreditation he added that "CRUTECH is the gate way to the hearts and minds of Cross Riverians as every home either has a graduate as a son or a student as a daughter therefore should not be allowed to die. "We're particularly concerned and disappointed that the Governor is busy expending money on endorsement where the only state University has no fund for her accreditation. This should not happen in an administration of two Professors who spent their formative years in the University".

While expressing his disappointment over the seeming government negligence, he called on well meaning Cross Riverians to help the institution persuade the Governor to release funds for the accreditation. He further revealed that the accreditation has been postponed twice due to paucity of funds adding that the last one was at the instance of the Governor who promised early release of funds to allow the university prepare but has now reneged on his promise as no funds has been released less than three weeks to the exercise. The President said that "15 out of about 28 undergraduate programmes will be undergoing NUC accreditation by April 2018 and at this point, the Visitor to the University and Governor of Cross River State has not released a dine to the University. "The accreditation has been rescheduled twice and the second time on the instance of the Governor. This 15 programmes cut across multiple faculties except the faculty of communication Technology. Some of the affected departments are Physiology, Biochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/ Electronics Engineering, Chemistry, Architecture, Physics etc. Should the university fail the accreditation, it will spell doom to the University as graduates of such departments will not proceed on NYSC and their certificates not recognized". He appealed that "We are calling on the good people of Cross River State to prevail on the Governor to do the needful as Education is the true bedrock of sustainable development and Growth of any society. The last accreditation was carried out on a loan which is yet to be paid in full. Our appeal is that the Governor who is a Professor should not neglect Education, the only antidote against poverty" While noting that N250Million is needed for the accreditation he added that "CRUTECH is the gate way to the hearts and minds of Cross Riverians as every home either has a graduate as a son or a student as a daughter therefore should not be allowed to die. "We're particularly concerned and disappointed that the Governor is busy expending money on endorsement where the only state University has no fund for her accreditation. This should not happen in an administration of two Professors who spent their formative years in the University".

Peace Corps Commandant cried Out As Madman Ends The Life's of Pupils in School.

The Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria, Ogun State Command, Patriot (Dr.) Olalekan Yusuff has expressed his sadness on the gruesome murder of two innocent pupils of Saint John's Anglican Primary school, Agodo, Ogun Waterside Local Government area of the state, noting that, if Peace Corps bill has been signed, such useless killing could have been prevented.

He lament how lives of innocent Nigerian child are exposed to different kind of threats due to lack of specialised agency in charge of protection and reorientation of the young ones.

In his words "I am sad. I feel very sad as a father and as a Nigerian because I know this is avoidable.

We have lost two lives, two innocent souls wasted due to lack of proactive measures by the leaders of their country.

I know, if Peace Corps bill had been passed and we are in full operation across all schools in Ogun State, such calamity would have been avoided. He stated.

The affected pupils, identified as Mubarak Kalesowo and Sunday Obituyi were playing with their peers during the lunch break at about half past eleven in the morning and were hacked down by a lunatic popularly known as Lekan Adebisi who came out of a nearby bush.

A source in the school hinted that the lunatic carried out the heinous act without any hindrance since their was no standby or specialised security in all government owned schools across the state.

Commenting on why Peace Corps has not been operating in some selected schools across the rural parts of Ogun State, the Commandant said they have written letters to the government to float Education marshalls in conjunction with the government but were told to hold on till the President assented to the bill.
< He said "we are operating in every parts of Ogun State and all the local council development areas but we have limitations. So we approached the State government to at least partner us as NGO to float Education marshalls pending the federal government approval of the Peace Corps bill but instead of grabbing the opportunity, the government said we should hold on till the bill is passed".

The commandant added that he knows that Police is working on how to apprehend the killer madman but Police work is different from of Peace Corps and wants Peace Corps to be given a chance.

He also appealed to the President to rescind his decision on the bill, noting that the Corps, under the leadership of Dr. Dickson Akoh has equipped thousands of unemployed youths in Nigeria and they are ready to help in reducing some of the crimes and criminality in the land through strategic and peaceful techniques.

The Association of Cross River Online Journalists (ACROJ) has slammed the Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, Mr. Clement Umina over subtle threats made to the association's acting chairman and publisher of Calabarblog, Mr. Hope Obeten.


Mr. Umina had circulated a statement on Friday where he denied an investigative report that he intimidated the management of the only cinema operating in Cross River State to a closure.


In the statement which was time tagged 5:30PM, Mr. Umina demanded "immediate" compliance with his "directive" to "take down that article with an unmitigated apology to be given same prominence and propensity commencing the next 60 minutes."


But, a statement issued Saturday morning by the acting secretary of the association, Mr. Jeremiah Archibong described Mr. Umina's comments as a "soft threat and a show of non civility least expected from a man heading a government parastatal that is the gateway to the state's image which is tourism."


The statement read in part: "The association frowns as Mr. Umina's subtle threats to its member and acting chairman, Mr. Hope Obeten.


"It is frustrating to read whatever he wrote as it clearly shows a man who does seem oblivious of his constitutional rights of legal redress, and prefers to intimidate in the most subtle of ways.


"The association seriously questions Mr. Umina's grandstanding as his so called directive is not only suggestive of one who has a skeleton in his cupboard, but also, one who will go extra lengths to keep the cupboard out of the public's view.


"The association hereby requests that Mr. Umina refrain from issuing such statements and advise he seeks known channels of communications to tender his frustrations concerning any news article published by member organizations of ACROJ.


"The association demands that Mr. Umina, being a public servant paid with taxpayers monies, answer the questions raised in the aforementioned reportage which places a question mark on his integrity and if confident of his innocent, seek redress appropriately."

Info-Quiz: Jesam Ofem Emerges Maiden Winner

Mr. Ofem, Jesam Igri has emerged winner of the maiden edition of the Info-Quiz Competition.
The prize presentation which was jointly done by the Commissioner for Information & Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Effiom Archibong and her Social Housing counterpart, Mr. Okokon Edem Effiom, took place during the “Good Morning Cross River” CRBC TV live.

Mrs. Archibong congratulated Mr. Ofem for his penchant for information, knowledge of government activities and projects, adding that being the winner of the maiden edition of Info-Quiz Competition was a great privilege that would boost his pedigree.

The Information and Orientation Commissioner said Info-Quiz is her Ministry’s initiative aimed at getting citizens to play active role in governance through the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating information, especially about the achievements of Governor Ayade administration.

She also revealed that questions for next week edition will be out on Monday, 12th March, 2018 and called on all and sundry to participate in subsequent weekly editions to stand a chance of winning amazing prizes.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Social Housing, Mr. Okokon Edem Effiom, said it is uplifting and inspiring to see a youth that is following the activities of the Ayade-led administration, pointing out that it would serve as a motivation for Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade to do more for the State.
Mr. Effiom, who described Info-Quiz as inspiring, thanked the Ministry of Information and Orientation for the noble idea of the Info-Quiz initiative to test the citizens’ knowledge on activities and programmes of government.

 Receiving the N10, 000 cash prize, an elated Ofem, Jesam Igri said “as a politically-conscious individual, he developed the knack to being regularly informed of government policies, projects, programmes and other topical issues going on in the State,” emphasizing that this background propelled him to participate in the Info-Quiz Competition.
