GOV. AYADE COMMENDS FEDERAL GOV’T INTERVENTION IN CURBING FLOOD & EROSION MENACE AT UNICAL

By Kingsley Agim

The State Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade has commended the Federal Government's intervention in constructing erosion and flood control works at the University of Calabar to curb the menace that has hitherto troubled the University Community.

Governor Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. RoseMary Archibong, gave the commendation during the commissioning and handing-over of the University of Calabar Erosion and Flood Control Works on 25th May, 2018 in Calabar.

The Governor pointed out that with the kind of heavy downpour that Calabar is known for and the problems erosion and flooding have caused the University environment, the Federal Government's gesture of constructing the flood and erosion control works could not have been more timely.

Senator Ayade expressed delight in the Federal Government's keen interest in Cross River State, recalling that Cross River was the very first State Mr. President visited for the groundbreaking of the Super Highway, adding that the government and good people of Cross River are happy with his goodwill towards State.

Governor Ayade also expressed appreciation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Boss Mustapha for inviting him to witness the epoch-making occasion.

Commissioning the Project, the representative of President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who is the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology stated that the laudable project was to make for a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in the University.

The Honourable Minister further stated that the project, which was completed four months ago, was intended to channel waste and flood water into a safe discharge point, thereby preventing erosion and flooding and environmental degradation in the University Community.

Dr. Onu said the Flood and Erosion Control Project at the University of Calabar, executed by the Ecological Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the federation (OSGF), is one of eighteen across the federation.

Conveying the President's goodwill to the people, Dr. Onu expressed joy at every opportunity of being in Cross River State, recalling his fond memories as an alumnus of Mary Knoll, Okuku – Yala, and having come from a region that was then under the Ogoja Province.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Zana Akpagu expressed delight at the Federal Government intervention, which he said has brought relief to the menace of flooding and erosion that has hitherto beset the University community, describing the event as a "happy day for everyone at the University of Calabar."

Prof. Akpagu expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that, as an alumnus of the University, his fellow alumni are happy and very much identify with his laudable programmes.

The University Don also remarked that as a way of keying into the President's anti-graft crusade, the University of Calabar is the first and only institution offering compulsory anti-corruption courses in conjunction with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

THIEVES, FRAUDSTERS AND OTHERS WILL NOT MAKE THE REGULARISATION LIST___ ODEY

By Uchino Amatey

Following His Excellency's approval to regularise contract staff, the Acting Managing Director, Cross River Water Board Limited (CRSWBL), Dr Stephen Odey has said that only disciplined, competent and dedicated staff will be employed into the civil service.

He made this known while addressing staff in the Conference room of CRSWBL, following reports on receipt forgery, theft of Water Board properties and other criminalities alleged to be perpetrated by some contract staff of the Board.

Dr Odey said according to reports, six contract staff were involved in receipt forgery to defraud the government, while others were involved in misappropriation of funds.

In his words "I have a report that about six persons were involved in receipt forgery to defraud the state government of revenue. They forged the board's receipts and use them to collect money without remitting it to the State, such people will never make the regularisation list. Some people also collected money and they were misappropriating the money without approval, you collect government money even if there had not been paid it is not your duty or responsibility to start using that money without following due process.

The Board will regularise only those who have shown commitment and discipline."

According to him, others who will not make the list include those who have been accused of theft, non-indigenes, those who are overaged, those with serious medical conditions, those involved in certificate forgery, amongst others.
"we do not want to keep those that  are not going to help this Board or any other place you  will be sent to, that is why  you must come with affidavit of  good character and medical fitness , if you are sick its better we know that you are sick so that we don't engage you. Very importantly, we are not ready to take those who have given this board serious cause for concern. I have the names of those people, we are not going to consider those that are involved in stealing the properties of Water Board. If you have such record against you just know that you are out," he stated.

Dr Odey further called on staff to return to work, warning that those who fail to do so will be expunged from the list "to whom much is given much is expected, I have been told that even after payment a lot of people have not returned to work, I need record of those persons, so that if their names falls among those to be regularised I will expunge them," he said.

Warning against certificate forgery, CRSWBL Boss noted that the State is the center of excellence educationally. He advised staff to maintain the status quo and return to school in other to get genuine certificates.

Meanwhile, the CRSWBL Boss has asked all staff staying in the Board's quarters to vacate the premises and follow due process by applying to the Board for allocation of houses. He said the decision to send contract staff away from the premises was influenced by reports of theft of the Board's properties.
In his words "for those of you that have invaded Water Board premises saying that you were allocated, I have not seen any a letter assigning people to stay there. No Contract staff has the statutory right to live in that quarters, because you didn't even have a pensionable job as at that time. So staying there is illegal and that is why I have been asked to come here and correct some things, it is not targeted at anybody, like some people ran to the media to tell lies. I don't know anybody here, but when the issue of stolen properties was reported to me and some of the contract staff who were involved in it were caught and taken to the State housing police station, I reported the matter to the governor and he directed that I send them out of the premises to guard against more cases of theft and ensure that the right thing is done."

He continued "We are not asking people to leave because we want to sell the place. if you are entitled to live there, write to me and I will give you allocation letter permitting you to stay stay there. We just have to be fair, nobody will come and address any anomaly in this Board, we owe it to ourselves to correct all anomalies.

Dr Odey said he will ensure that those who have other employment are also removed from the regularisation list. "for those of you who have been here and you think you are playing smart, I am an expert in verifying and investigating people, some of you are working with Npower, some Secondary Education Board. You know that you will go to jail if it is discovered that you are collecting salary from two different places, I already have some names, such people will definitely have to go. That shows that you have criminal tendency, there is no reason why you will not continue to forge our receipts to get money from customers. We need only responsible, committed and dedicated staff in this Board," he emphasized.

The CRSWBL Boss who also doubles as the Executive Chairman SUBEB said he will continue to go after all those who are trying to sabotage the efforts of government by engaging in all forms of criminalities.

Responding on behalf of Contract Staff, the Store Officer, John Effiom thanked the governor for his kind gesture and assured him of their continuous support. He added that, they will carry out their work diligently and cooperate with the Acting Managing Director to render quality service to Cross Riverians.

Ikpeazu seeks FG's support for C'River superhighway, deep seaport

Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has called on the Federal Government to lend its support for the actualization of the 274km superhighway and the Bakassi Deep Seaport projects embarked by the Cross River Government.

Ikpeazu who was speaking at the Cross River State Executive Council Chamber, Calabar, Monday, when he paid a visit on his Cross River counterpart, Professor Ben Ayade, maintained that the projects were of huge economic benefits not only to Cross River, but the entire country, particularly, the South East.

The Abia state governor, who expressed excitement at the multi-billion dollars twin projects said: "It is only a man of courage and vision that can embark on such monumental projects. It is not about Cross River but about Nigeria."

While urging the Federal Government's support for Ayade's signature project, Ikpeazu said: "If we all support the governor to bring the projects to fruition, they will ramp up the economy of not only Cross River, but also that of the North East as it will allow access to the sea in a few hours and the potentials of that opportunity will add value to other states."

Insisting that the Bakassi deep seaport and the superhighway

have the capacity to diversify the nation's economy, Governor Ikpeazu also maintained: "If we are serious about diversification and giving equal opportunities to all parts of Nigeria, serious about combating crime and all those things that have held us down economically, the best thing to do is to encourage the realisation of these signature projects. So we are appealing to the good reasons and logic of our leaders everywhere to lend their voice and support."

Ikpeazu said it is ironic "for a country that is so blessed with many opportunities from its geography through the sea, rivers, oceans to the people to stick to strict restrictions created by them, instead of placing their fingers on those things that God has given to them freely."

Ikpeazu said his state which shares borders with Cross River will be privileged to benefit from the abundant natural endowment that God has blessed the state with, adding that "the time for us to tap the full potentials of the seaport in Cross River is now and so, it is not proper to restrict the entrepreneurial spirit and energy of our people to just one or two seaports in the midst of many opportunities around us."

The Abia governor who Described Governor Ayade as a visionary leader who is opening vistas of economic growth through the natural endowments, advocated for the marketing of Nigeria through the perspective of Cross River.

"A peep into Nigeria through the Cross River perspective will present a country of peace, great cultural heritage, a people who are hospitable and prepared to accept the world.

"If we market our foreign direct investment efforts through the perspective of Cross River, I think we will achieve greater strides than we are doing now."

He stressed the need for leaders to move away from what he termed 'election politicians' to visionary leaders of tomorrow who will peep into the future to see what the people need, while urging Cross Riverians to hold fast to Ayade whom God has placed in their hands to position the state where it rightly belongs in the scheme and map of things going forward.

Responding, Governor Ben Ayade thanked his guest for urging the federal government to give all institutional support for the realisation of the superhighway and deep seaport so that every region of the nation has a feel of self worth and value.

While admitting that marketing Nigeria from the Cross River perspective remained the best way to go, Ayade quipped: "But how can you market a state without opening the maritime corridor for huge commercial trade?"

He maintained that as a state that still feels the pains of the loss of its land and the 76 oil wells, which has exposed its people to communal clashes everyday because of hunger,  poverty and struggle for land and survival, Governor Ayade said it behoved on the federal government to wipe the tears of the people of the state. One of the ways to do that is by giving institutional support for the realisation of the deep seaport and superhighway, he stated.
