On Nigerian Energy

Across the Balkans, there are hundreds of new energy assets being built in form of hydroelectric dams in several regions. It's a fact that Energy-surplus is a must for economic growth and national progress.

Same way that region of the world understands the fact that energy-mix is key to building a sustainable and efficient energy surplus needed to drive and accelerate economic growth, and this a coalition of both the private sector and public institution have been working tirelessly to pursue.

Over here in Nigeria, the story is totally different, what we have seen is a miscalculated attempt on the part of the federal government on how to proceed in resolving our national energy crisis.

First, the federal government refused to privatise the subsector for decades and just within the last five years claimed that she has granted privatization right to three company categories in respect to Nigerian energy supply chain, only to switch behind close door to impose needless regulations that now stiffen the growth and expansion of energy investment which is central to building a worldclass energy outcome for all.

The federal government must fully deregulate the energy market and create the enabling environment to allow the sector to survive. As it stands today, Nigerians and the Nigerian industry need over 325,478Megawatts of electricity against the below 4000Megawatts that we currently boost of.

Today, I'm calling on all well meaning Nigerians to call for a new energy policy and bill that would envision and embolden a new energy solution that we all need to create meaningful economic growth across the country.

In respect to ban on generator, let me make it extensively clear that I'm in full support of banning the use of generators in the offices of political office holders and those of political appointees_ starting from the office of the president down to that of a local government councilor to those of SSA to the various elected officers of government.

If generators are banned at that level it would enable them to hasten their dedication at fixing the energy deficit we have in the country, thereby resolving the energy crisis.

If there is a way the bill can target, identify and capture their homes and businesses too_ it would be a lot better.

Finally I am completely opposed to banning generators in the homes and offices of non-elected and non-appointed public officers

Let's join the discussion and shape the policy-outcome with suggestions that can foist government to do the right thing.

For until everyone in government is affected by the power irregularity without option of generator I doubt if they will be moved to fix the challenge once and for all.

Solar energy and all other alternatives should be given same treatment until the challenge goes away.

CRHIS will herald a major health revolution in C’River – Iyala

By Kingsley Agim, CRS-MOI Officer, reporting from CRHIA

The Director-General of Cross River Health Insurance Agency, also known as ‘AYADECARE,’ Chief Godwin Iyala has vehemently stated that the “well conceptualized” Cross River Health Insurance Scheme, on commencement of enrollment, would herald a major health revolution as the State surges towards achieve Universal Health Coverage for her citizens.

The Director-General, who made the affirmation during a media parley held recently in his Office in Calabar, also disclosed that the State Governor, Sir Ben Ayade will be flagging-off the commencement of enrolment into the Scheme on 7th April, 2020, being the United Nations’ World Health Day.

Chief Iyala stated that the Agency and Scheme which were flagged-off in 2018 by the Governor, duly backed by Act 2016 of the Law of the State, has partnered United State Agency for International Development (USAID), through Health Finance Governance Project, in setting up the governance architecture as well as operational guidelines ahead of the implementation of the Scheme.

The CRHIA Boss restated the Ayade-led administration’s commitment towards the commencement of the Scheme in order for residents of the State to enjoy quality healthcare, noting that AYADECARE will cushion out-of-pocket/catastrophic spending on health and bring succor to all residents of the State.

He hinted that the Scheme’s package will cater for ailments such as caesarean sections for pregnant women, tuberculosis, leprosy, cancer (to an extent) and all other basic ailments, noting that to qualify for access to such healthcare, an enrollee is expected to pay a monthly fee of one thousand naira (N1, 000.00), amounting to twelve thousand naira (12, 000.00) per annum.

Continuing, Chief Iyala remarked that “the Federal Government contribution of one percent (1%) of its Consolidated Revenue Fund to every State Social Health Insurance Agency/Scheme, amounting to 55.1 billion for the 36 States and Federal Capital Territory is expected to enroll the ‘Vulnerable Population’ – children of 0-5 years, pregnant women (mostly from the indigent community), the aged, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and by extension, some indigent persons living with ‘vertical diseases’ like HIV, tuberculosis, leprosy, etc.”

He also reminded that, in addition, the State Governor approval one percent (1%) of the State’s Consolidated Revenue to be contributed into the Scheme as well as the 100 million compulsory commitment fee, accessible to the Scheme, further lend impetus to the smooth take-off of Scheme on April 7, 2020.

The DG said the target from the flag-off is to capture at least one million enrollees by the end of 2020, making about 20% of the population of the State, hoping that by 2022, a larger part of the State’s population will be captured into the Scheme, strengthening the State’s march towards achievement of Universal Health Coverage.

Muri Munene Itam advised the Team to liaise with Clan Heads of the various communities to ensure seamless operation in the course of the exercise.

The Paramount Ruler promised to constitute a delegation from the Kingdom to visit CRGIA for further enlightenment on land transactions, while calling on his subjects to take advantage of the opportunity to deal with land-related issues.
