Anambra Son is The First Black VC Of A UK University



Professor Charles Egbu, from Idemili North LGA, Anambra State of Nigeria, has been appointed Vice-chancellor of Leeds Trinity University.

That makes him the first black VC of a UK University. Great achievement! Congratulations Prof.

Professor Charles Egbu was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education & Experience) at the University of East London, England, UK.

He was formerly the Dean of School of the Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University, UK, where he held the Chair in Project Management and Strategic Management in Construction.

Heh also held academic posts at University College London (UCL), University of Salford, Leeds Metropolitan University, and Glasgow Caledonian University.

 His First Degree was in Quantity Surveying [First Class Honours]. His Doctorate was obtained from the University of Salford, UK, in the area of Construction Project Management.

He  is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), Fellow of the Association for Project Management (FAPM), Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He was until 2014 a Director and member of the Board of Trustees for the Association for Project Management (APM), and Chairman of the Professional Standards and Knowledge (PS&K) committee of the Association for Project Management.  He was admitted to the Worshipful Company of Constructors in May 2017 and received the Freedom of the City of London in 2017.


He has over 25 years of experience in the Higher Education sector.  He has lectured, nationally and internationally, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas such as sustainable development, resilient communities, construction economics, contract procurement, project management, construction management, and Innovation & knowledge management in complex environments.

  He has also developed several education and training programmes for the construction industry and construction organisations. His research is in similar areas to his education and training interests, where he has attracted more than £25m from many research funding bodies – nationally and internationally. He is an author of 12 books in Project Management, Construction Management, Knowledge Management, and Sustainable Development. He has strong links with industry, professional bodies and policy makers in several countries. He has managed several large multi-disciplinary research projects as Principal Investigator and led a number of successful Research Centres. He was formerly a Member of the Peer Review College of the UK Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) and a member of the Peer Review College of the UK  Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). He also sits on many Editorial Boards, and National and International Scientific Committees to do with research in Architecture, Engineering and Construction.


He was the Chair of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM: 2010 – 2012). He is a Visiting Professor to a number of Universities in Europe, Africa, and Asia. He has supervised over 30 PhD students and examined over 80 PhD candidates world-wide; and has acted as an External Examiner to many undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in many universities all over the world.

 He has contributed over 350 publications in various international journals and conferences and has hosted, chaired and spoken at many conferences in his areas of expertise. In addition, he has chaired many industry and government committees to do with the built and natural environments, and produced many practitioner-based reports, policy and guidance documents
