An attorney, Barr. Wodah Ogar who represented the people of Bakassi in the case between Bakassi and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over delineation of wards and constituencies pursuant to Law No.7 of Cross River State, has urged INEC to implement the judgment of the Supreme Court with immediate effect.
Clearing the air on the recent musings surrounding the Supreme Court judgment of February 23, 2018, Barr. Wodah Ogar stated that the apex court clearly directed INEC to do the needful by delineating the areas spelt out in Law No.7, being the Ikang area of former Akpabuyo LGA into State constituencies for purpose of elections.
On the Apex Court judgment ordering INEC to “go ahead and do the needful,” the legal luminary said the clause meant that “INEC should proceed and therefore reflect Ikang in its directory as Bakassi and not Akpabuyo, so that in subsequent elections, votes from Ikang would be counted for Bakassi and not the other way round.”
Barr. Ogar urged INEC to expedite action in complying with the Supreme Court judgment to give the Bakassi people a sense of belonging and the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming elections.
Reacting with ecstasy to the victory, one of the litigants, Chief Antigha Antigha Cobham of Ikang expressed satisfaction in the Apex Court’s verdict upholding Law No.7 as valid, describing it as “victory for the people of Bakassi.”
Chief Cobham called on Bakassians to come together now that the matter is over and make the New Bakassi their own.
Also expressing his joy, another litigant, Muri Edet Etim Asuquo, said now that Bakassi have been vindicated from the travesty they had faced from INEC and other detractors, the people of Bakassi can heave a sigh of relief and enjoy all benefits as Bakassians and Cross Riverians.
