INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ENHANCE LEARNING__ ODEY
By Uchino Amatey
The Executive Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB), Dr Stephen Odey has called on all teachers to use learning aids and instructional materials in the delivery of their lessons to generate active participation from pupils and aid understanding of the subject matter.
He made this known during unscheduled visits to Unity Primary School, Ugep, Yakurr LGA and Holy Child Convent Primary School, Ofodua, Obubra LGA in the on-going monitoring of schools and inspection of projects by SUBEB.
While addressing teachers of both schools, Dr Odey said pupils will understand lessons better when there are practical illustrations with teaching and learning aids rather than through abstract teaching.
According to him “Children learn better by seeing and touching, you cannot just enter the class and start teaching abstractly without drawings, pictorials, objects, or showing relevant examples that they can relate to base on the subject matter.”
He urged teachers to use instructional materials in order to enhance pupils learning and retention which he said is paramount in effective lesson delivery.
Dr Odey further commended teachers for their neat appearance, organised classrooms and attitude towards teaching. He said many more visits will be paid to schools to ensure that teachers leave up to their responsibilities and carry out their duties diligently.
