NEW PORTABLE SOLAR SYSTEMS INTRODUCED TO LIGHT UP MORE PRIMARY HEALTH CENTERS IN REMOTE AREAS
Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu has facilitated new portable solar systems distribution into Primary Healthcare Centres in remote and hard to reach areas to support services with the aim of promoting safe motherhood and reduces maternal mortality by providing health workers with reliable lighting, and mobile communication, using solar electricity.
Speaking, Dr Betta Edu said for a continent with abundant sunlight and poor electricity grid coverage, Africa makes very little use of solar power in the health sector. According to her, the initiatives is very essential to so many medical interventions including night-time emergency response.
"Every time I walk past a darkened health clinic at night, I think that someone will die or be poorly served," she says. "And every time I turn on a light I feel like I am saving a life."
She added that His Excellency, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade goal is to ensure that mothers and newborns are born in skilled healthcare facilities that have adequate lighting and power to save lives.
Dr Edu also concluded that over 150 Primary Healthcare Centers across the State have so far benefitted from We Care Solar, while about 120 health facilities have had theirs installed already as Cross River State take the lead on harnessing Africa's untapped solar energy potential for quality Healthcare.
