COVID 19: Peace Corps deploys 100 personnel to enforce govt’s order in C/River

By GEORGE ODOK

The Nigeria Peace Corps in Cross River has deployed over 100 personnel to join other security agents to enforce the state government orders to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Dr Dominic Okweche, the state Commandant of the corps, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Calabar.

Okweche said that the personnel of the Corps had been properly trained and enlightened on how to enforce government’s directives.

NAN reports that Gov. Ben Ayade had issued executive orders mandating all residents in the state to always wear nose masks, and avoid gatherings.

The governor also ordered all the borders with neighbouring states to be shut down and mandated commercial drivers not to carry more than two passengers in their cabs within Calabar, the state capital.

Okweche, who described the steps taken by the governor in the fight against COVID-19 as commendable, said that the corps had to contribute its own quota in the efforts at containing the spread of the virus in the state.

“At this point, I want to salute Gov. Ayade for being proactive in making Cross River COVID-19 free. The Peace Corps of Nigeria thought it very necessary to contribute its own quota to the very laudable policies of the governor.

“If you go around the state, you will find our men in strategic places, working in harmony with other security agencies and government officials, to ensure that the orders given by the state government are enforced to the latter.

“So far, the work has been tedious, but the good thing is that the people of Cross Rivers are highly civilized and the level of compliance has been encouraging.

“We have deployed over 100 of our men to various locations across the state to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

He advised the residents to obey the simple health guides on the preventive measures of the virus, adding that the state government orders were in their overall interest.

COVID-19: Use the face mask, it’s in your best interest--Dr Betta

The Chairman of the COVID -19 Taskforce, Honorable Commissioner for Health Cross River State Dr Betta Edu and the Secretary of the Taskforce Hon Asuquo Ekpeyong Jr; lead the enforcement team on Easter Sunday; comprising of Dr Mboto, General Ayim, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, Hon Ani Esin and others through the streets of calabar South and metropolises to ensure total compliance with public health safety directives issued by the Government of the state.

Dr Edu has asked Cross Riverians to strictly adhered to The policy of No Mask No Movement which is a bold step in the right direction. “If we understand that when a person sneezes or coughs or even speak loud in an environment the micro-droplet  emission can remain in the air for a long time or drop on surfaces when we don’t use a mask. For rooms with poor ventilation, little or no air flow ( probably due to the use of AC or high humidity), the infected micro-droplets stay in the air longer. Another person without a mask will automatically pick this up into their respiratory tract when the enter same environment minutes later or when their hands which have touched contaminated surfaces get to their eyes, nose or mouth.

The face mask shields you, fabric mask with the double layer like what is made from our garment factory in Cross River state will give  protect to both parties such that even if any particle of the micro- droplet leaves one mask, with reduction in velocity, the infected micro-droplet loses the ability to penetrate the next face mask and infect the other person. In same environment. This is a simple explanation amongst other reasons why we must use the mask. It has prevented the incidence of disease in some countries and broken transmission from person person in others!

Furthermore religious houses and schools should remain shut as we work together to keep COVID -19 out of our state

Abati: A ghost attempting resurrection

By: Agim King

Although responding to Reuben Abati's unsavoury comments on Arise News's 'The Morning Show,' albeit on a subject that exposed his ineptitude, is likened to flogging a dead horse; it is important to clarify the unsuspecting public about the sinister motive of the infamous ex-aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Reputed for his hoodoo of allowing the usurpation of the media space by the opposition, leading to the failure of his Boss, then President Goodluck Jonathan; Reuben Abati's story is that of one who has lost his mettle and grappling with joblessneess.

Wallowing in his cocoon, after years of inactivity, muddled up with a history of financial improprieties, Abati's only way to resurrection was resorting to mudslinging a reputable gentleman in the person of Sir Prof. Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State, who has become a national reference point through his trailblazing strides in agro-industrialization and other policy thrusts of his administration.

Paraphrasing the words of Brendan Behan: "critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it's done, they've seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves." Our overrated journalist, Reuben Abati, was some years ago in a position to stamp his foot on the ground as Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, given his acclaim in the media industry. Mr. 'Infallible' Abati, amongst other things, failed abysmally in delivering on his mandate.

For a man who could be adjudged to be personification of sycophancy and bootlicking through obsequious manner, the downtrodden Abati, had the effontry of name-callings on a man, who in all ramifications stands taller than the former.

In all his acclaimed erudition, howbeit in fields such as theatre, artistic embellishments, commentary, et cetera, Brother Abati threw caution to the wind by not questioning the integrity of Governor Ben Ayade, in blatant exhibition of overt rage and agitation.

But may I borrow the words of Mark Twain, when he cautioned: "One must not criticize other people on grounds where he cannot stand perpendicular himself.” Abati's scholarship in journalism should have kept him in good stead to apply his investigative skills instead of dabbling into criticizing the policies of the Ayade-led administration,he has no faint knowledge about.

With his verbal barbs on the newsstand of Vanguard Newspapers over the years, could not translate into meaningful success in his attempts to gain political prominence. No wonder he is wallowing in the chasms of political waterloo.

Abati's attempt to discredit a man of Ayade's pedigree, a scholar of impressive erudition, with scientific breakthroughs to his credit, gives credence to his crass incivility and ineptitude. Should Abati be trying to resurrect his ghost, which has been wondering in the wilderness of failure for years now, I advise him to backtrack to reviewing his unfitness that led to Africa's biggest political failure in 2015 (Goodluck Jonathan's defeat), rather than resorting to activities that would further cement his place in political oblivion.

I urge the people-oriented Governor, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade not to be ditered by the shenanigans of Reuben Abati, restating the words of Zig Ziglar: "Do not be distracted by criticism. Remember – the only taste of success some people have is when they take a bite out of you.”

Easter: Hon. Itam Abang urges prayers for peace, economic growth

Hon. Itam Abang, member representing Boki 1 in the Cross River House of Assembly, has called on Boki 1 constituents and Christians across the country to use the Easter celebration to pray for sustainable peace and economic growth in the country.

Dr Abang, in her message to mark the Easter festivities being held in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ by Christians across the world, said it is imperative for all Nigerians to borrow a leaf from the humility and sacrifice exhibited by Christ when he yielded his life for the redemption of mankind.

She commended the Christian community for their fast and prayers during the Lenten season and urged them to sustain the tempo for the continued peace and unity of the nation.

The lawmaker reminded the Christian faithful of the need to remain steadfast and always promote religious harmony between and among various groups as a panacea for developing the nation.

Easter is the most important feast in the Christian calendar and represents God’s redemptive mission over humanity, the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair and good over evil.

“The Christian festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ is also a time to emulate the virtues of love, sacrifice, forgiveness, humility, courage and endurance, which Christ embodied and remarkably demonstrated during His earthly ministry.

Let us use this auspicious season to show love to our neighbours, and cater to the needs of the less-privileged in our midst.

“We must reinforce the bond of brotherhood and good neighbourliness that citizens of a cohesive country must share", she said.

She thanked the good people of Boki 2 for their support and cooperation all through, adding that she would continue to represent their interests in the Assembly for the growth and development of the constituency.

Easter Message: Chairman CRS COVID-19 Response Taskforce felicitates with Cross Riverians

As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ so shall we celebrate a COVID-19 free state in Cross River at the end of this outbreak by Gods grace.

This will be the first and may be the only Easter in our lives that would be spent at home with almost all churches closed world over, not by choice but because the human race is faced with a strange pandemic!

Like our Dear Governor Sen Ben Ayade, a knight and a dedicated follower of Christ who has followed his foot step to sacrifice comfort, sleep and very lean state resources to see that Cross Riverians can sleep and our state can be shut out of COVID-19; in his words, He called on humanity to return back to seeking God, as that is the only way out of this challenging times!

As we celebrate Easter 2020, the world is united, we are united in fear of what tomorrow will bring, of not knowing if our societies will withstand the devastating impact of Coronavirus pandemic. The good news is Christ is resurrected! Christ resurrection comes with forgiveness, peace and restoration to humanity.

The love of Christ urges us to come as one state, one nation and pray, eulogise the saviour and seek for forgiveness of our sins.  This love, seen in small and large gestures of hope and solidarity is calling us to a new future and a new way of living. Covid-19 knows no borders but neither do faith, hope and love of God.

In the darkness of this crisis, the light of Christ will shine, Jesus is truly risen!. May the risen Jesus continue to rise for Cross River state and all people around the world through his love. Let us pray to find the deeper meaning of this challenge that is facing the whole of humanity and which is calling us to faith and to resurrection.

The Government under the leadership of
His Excelleny, Senator Prof Ben Ayade will ensure that the effect of this pandemic does not negatively affect  persons across the State. Food and other relief materials will be distributed to most households beginning from Tuesday. While the distribution of face mask and hand sanitizers is already on going with all our borders shut!

I wish you all a COVID-19 free Easter of love and Peace.

Don’t distance yourself from your Love ones socially. Reach out to them through as many mediums as are prescribed safe, Support others emotionally and together we will over come COVID-19
# NO MASK NO MOVEMENT!

Covid-19: C’River Speaker Urges Nigerians to be Closer To God at Easter

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams, has urged Nigerians and Cross Riverians in particular to continue to pray for the country and be closer to God amidst the rampaging Covid-19 pandemic.

The Speaker made this appeal in his Easter message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Hope Obeten, and made available to newsmen in Calabar.

Williams said that the circumstances of the celebration this year’s Easter are peculiar, noting that like never before the world is bound together to deal with unprecedented adversity.

“Easter is all about the trial, crucifixion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a time for sober reflection.

“However, we are celebrating this year’s Easter in very challenging circumstances occasioned by the outbreak and fast-spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic globally.

“But as children of the Living God, we should not despair, let us be prayerful and look up to the Author and Finisher of our Faith.

This current dark hour across the globe will give way to light,” the Speaker said.

“I want to commend our dear Governor for his relentless efforts in this trying period. He has been able to keep Cross River State Covid-19 free despite our neighbouring states recording cases. His novel policy of no mask no movement is today being copied in most states and countries,” he said.

The Speaker assured that the State Assembly will continue to provide legislative backing to support and improve the efforts of the Government in this trying period and beyond.

He also used the opportunity to commend the efforts of all the health workers and stakeholders who are at the frontline for God to protect them.

”Once again, On behalf of the leadership and members of the Cross River State House of Assembly, I wish us a Happy Easter, I urge us to strictly observe and adhere to instructions given by the state government on use of face mask, regular hand washing with soap, use of hand sanitiser and social distancing to curtail any eventuality.” he added.

EASTER MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL ADVISER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, GOV BEN AYADE, ON HEALTH

At Easter, Christians all over the world come together in celebration of the redemption of man through Jesus Christ. Although, he was blameless, Jesus Christ accepted to die to reconcile man to God.

At Easter, humanity is called to partake in the friendship and blessings of the trinity: God the father, God the son, and God the holy spirit. Families and friends come together to share, in happiness, the salvation news that comes with this reunion of man with God, his creator.

Sadly but with great hope, the 2020 Easter has come amidst mixed feelings. Our society has been strained to it's breaking limits with many who are now sick or dead from COVID 19 pandemic.

As it is expected of a people's Government, our Governor and Government are aware of the sufferings on the land.

We have watched as our social values, acquired through years of human civilizations, have been turned into weapons of death against us. We are advised to avoid handshakes or hugging. We cannot kiss or peck one another as usual. We cannot associate in sports or in the usual meetings that are vital for our businesses to grow. Our schools are closed and churches are deserted. Today, our people are literarily worshiping our God in 'hiding'.

Family visits are discouraged. Many in our country have been forcefully taken away from their home and love by way of forced isolation in far away lands while others have done so at home by way of a difficult volitional duty to the state.

While we endure all these, families and individuals have seen their businesses ruined in the lock down. Painfully too, those who could feed themselves yesterday are dependent on handouts today.

All these notwithstanding, I bring you messages of hope: that we shall overcome these tough times. Our Government has been with Cross Riverians all along.

His Excellency, Sen Prof Ben Ayade has continued to monitor events with clinical attention. In his belief that life is our greatest assets, governor Ayade has continued to take steps to prevent the emergence of a COVID 19 case in Cross River state. In line with guidelines from the WHO and NCDC, the governor announced the stay at home executive order,  border closure, closure of schools as well as ban on all non essential gatherings in the state. We have been told to wash our hands regularly with soap and water and to use alcohol based hand sanitizers when and where the earlier are absent.

Other executive actions announced by His Excellency so far includes the social distancing and lately, the compulsory wearing of nose masks in Cross River state. Governor Ayade has similarly equipped isolation and treatment centres which are at various states of readiness, should a COVID 19 case be found in our population. Given that the novel disease has not treatment or vaccines, the governor has eloquently emphasized his preference for a Post - pandemic "COVID 19 - free" Cross River State by taking many personal actions.

For instance, Ayade has personally manned our various interstate and international borders, in rotations with our security operatives, to enforce their closure against those whose visit threaten our health.

Government has maintained the policy of the distributions of free nose masks, free food items and other social palliative measures which are now ready for distribution, within the week, to our citizens in all the wards in the state. The purpose is to lessen the deprivations and sufferings associated with the prevailing lockdown, especially for those whose trades remain in the prohibition list as well as other vulnerable populations in our communities who lack independent livelihood.

Finally, as a responsible government, we respect the views of citizens who have taken critical view of our responses so far. We promise to continuously improve our public messaging and to maintain consistency on the various safe behaviours advise that will remain valid means to prevent a COVID 19 case detection in Criss River state.

Thank you and God bless you all. Happy Easter.

NOT ALL DEATH THIS PERIOD IS FROM CORONA VIRUS ....Dr Betta Edu

Information reaching the Cross River state ministry of health and the COVID - 19 response situation room  has shown evidence of artificial scare created by some members of the fifth columnist who believe that by causing false scare, certain Local Governments will receive more funding and support than others or more attention than others

The public is by this notice requested to completely disregard this information as the are distractions in the fight against COVID -19. The false report revealed that two ladies who returned from Italy through Cameroon have died of Corona virus at Bomaji village in Eastern Boki after infecting some persons.

First we must clearly state that our dear state is COVID-19 Free and this has become a source of worry for some persons who believe by their speculations the state should have recorded several

cases. Some Persons have gone as far as signing and circulating false press release claiming it was under signed by the Honorable Commissioner For Health or Chief Press Secretary to Governor, just in bid a to mislead the public and cause chaos.

As a responsive proactive Government under Sen Ben Ayade, we have always sent several samples of suspected case who meet the NCDC Criteria, last week all samples sent came back negative. we will continue to send samples if we find cases which meet the criteria.

Furthermore, Disease Surveillance and notifications Officers in Boki have  been sent to follow up on the case and found same to be false as no previous medical history was suggestive of Corona Virus disease. NOT ALL DEATH THIS PERIOD IS FROM CORONA VIRUS!

Finally, the pro active world renowned Governor of Cross River State Prof Ben Ayade has provided for taskforce in all the border communities, maned by Commissioners and their team members, working with security agencies to keep our borders closed to Cameroonians

Members of the public are advised not to panic or circulate false rumors, stay at home and ensure their hands are washed often as this will help keep our state  COVID -19 free

Covid-19: Cross River State receives 6000 bags of semovita from Flourmill

As donations trickle in from organizations and private firms for the fight against Coronavirus in the state, the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency Dr Linda Ayade and the Cross River State Covid-19 Taskforce team led by the honorable commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu were on ground to received 6,000 bags of semovita donated by Flourmill PLC at the Food Bank Warehouse, State Housing Estate Calabar as part of their cooperate social responsibility aim at supporting the State provide food for the poorest and the most vulnerable households in Cross River State as part of efforts to cushion the effect of stay at home order.

Her Excellency, Dr Linda Ayade who received the items with joy thank the company for the huge donations and assured them of equal distributions to households across the State. She stated that more of this support is needed in the State as all hands must be on deck to ensure people don't suffer the economic effect of border shut down and stay at home order of the State Government.

"You see the lock out was necessary, a precautionary step to stop the virus from entering the State. The virus doesn't move around but people move around with it, so with the gesture of Flourmill Nigeria I can assure Cross Riverians that in a week time all households within the register will get same as we move to defeat the pandemic. Her Excellency noted.

Similarly, Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu commended Flourmill for their passionate support.  She said Covid-19 response in Cross River State is aimed at prevention and so preventing the virus will work effectively if people stay at home and observe social distancing with frequent hand washing but this could be frustrated if people are hungry and the only means for them is to go out and cater for food thus defeating the essence of stay at home order. This according to her prompted His Excellency, Senator Prof Ben Ayade to ease the effect of staying at home by providing food for households across the state using the World bank register.

She assured Cross Riverians that food will go round to all households in the State while appealing for patience as distribution will commence immediately all food items are fully received from farmers as ordered

Present at the warehouse to received Flourmill donation was Chairman Food Bank Commission, Mrs Mercy Akpama, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Welfare, Mrs Blessing Egbara and Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Mr Asu Okang. Etc
