The Nigeria Peace Corps in Cross River has deployed over 100 personnel to join other security agents to enforce the state government orders to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
Dr Dominic Okweche, the state Commandant of the corps, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Calabar.
Okweche said that the personnel of the Corps had been properly trained and enlightened on how to enforce government’s directives.
NAN reports that Gov. Ben Ayade had issued executive orders mandating all residents in the state to always wear nose masks, and avoid gatherings.
The governor also ordered all the borders with neighbouring states to be shut down and mandated commercial drivers not to carry more than two passengers in their cabs within Calabar, the state capital.
Okweche, who described the steps taken by the governor in the fight against COVID-19 as commendable, said that the corps had to contribute its own quota in the efforts at containing the spread of the virus in the state.
“At this point, I want to salute Gov. Ayade for being proactive in making Cross River COVID-19 free. The Peace Corps of Nigeria thought it very necessary to contribute its own quota to the very laudable policies of the governor.
“If you go around the state, you will find our men in strategic places, working in harmony with other security agencies and government officials, to ensure that the orders given by the state government are enforced to the latter.
“So far, the work has been tedious, but the good thing is that the people of Cross Rivers are highly civilized and the level of compliance has been encouraging.
“We have deployed over 100 of our men to various locations across the state to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
He advised the residents to obey the simple health guides on the preventive measures of the virus, adding that the state government orders were in their overall interest.
