54 HEALTH WORKERS IN CROSS RIVER STATE FACE SANCTION OVER EXTORTION OF MONIES FROM THE PUBLIC.
Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has taken stance measures against any act of indiscipline from its staff across the State by inviting over 54 health workers to appear before her disciplinary committee in Calabar to answer queries about absenteeism, gross misconduct and extortion of community members seeking healthcare services amongst others.
Speaking, Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr Betta Edu said the disciplinary committee was set up to checkmate workers and punish offenders to serve as deterrent to other staff who want to follow their path.
She said one of the issues in service delivery at the primary healthcare level is staff absenteeism, reporting late to duty, locking up facilities and collecting monies under the table by charging public for services that is suppose to be Free.
According to her, His Excellency Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade who is a labour friendly Governor has been paying staff salaries and rural allowance on time and as such there is no need for sharp practices. She said the Agency is looking into improving their integrated supportive supervision for staff to ensure that facilities are open when due even as the agency is relying on leaders or members of the communities to report erring health workers for sanction and necessary disciplinary actions.
Earlier Speaking, Chairman of the Committee and SSA Primary Healthcare, Hon Joseph Idiege said Healthcare delivery deserves the greatest attention and that is why concerted efforts is being made by the Agency not only to identify areas of weakness of the health workers but also exploring vigorous measures to make service delivery a truly enduring and supportive venture which will help drive the revitalization agenda of the Governor Ben Ayade's administration in Healthcare.
He noted that some staff connived, contrived and collaborated with one Resonance Medical Team (RMT) to illegally extort monies from unsuspecting members of the public in the health facility.
Idiege assured that erring staff will be punished and possibly post out to another health facility in order to restore quality services in their present centres.
The Committee is made up of Hon Joseph Idiege SSA PHCDA as Chairman, Director of Finance, Tiku Tiku Takim, Mr Ekereke Augustine from PRS, Director Primary Healthcare, Dr Onabieni O. Ana, Director of Adminstration, Pastor Efiom Daniel B and Ojah Joseph.
