BUHARI'S DECLARATION TO CONTEST FOR A SECOND TERM: A PAY CHEQUE FOR ANIMALS
There is so much joy and jubilation in the animal kingdom over the declaration of Buhari to re-contest for a second term in office. Snakes are smiling, Monkeys are merrying, Rats are rejoicing and Cows are full of cheers. There are sure of a better life for at least, another four years. That is because no government in Nigeria has been so kind to them than the Buhari government. So, the second term will amount to another pay cheque. It has been a government of animals for animals and by animals. Before some people would accuse me of insulting the personalities of their paymasters, let me quickly ask: What do you say of a government where: ‘’Rats chase the president from office after 2 million fumigation?’’ ‘’What about a system where: ‘’Snake allegedly swallows 36 million naira from JAMB office vault?’’ Where else in the world did: ‘’Monkeys swallow 70 million of Northern Senators Forum?’’ ‘’Where else are human beings killed for cows to live?’’ Where else, do you have blood flow like rivers of water for cows’ sake? Where else, except Nigeria? Not even in Chile during the reign of the ‘’dreaded’’ Augusto Pinochet. Not even in Liberia during the reign of the ‘’deadly’’ Charles Taylor. Not even in Libya during the days of the ‘’demonic’’ Muammar Mohammed Gaddafi. If Buhari were to consult my opinion, I would tell him to retire to his Daura home in peace. I would tell him not to pursue power than his people. I would tell him that you don’t need to stay too long in power for history to be kind to you. I will tell him that those around him who want him to run for a second term are not sincere to him. I will tell him that at his age, he needs sufficient rest. I will tell him that at a certain age, health and strength fail if you overstretch and stress the bones. I will tell him that you don’t need to marry power to be remembered by your people. A grateful Nation will always appreciate you, whether alive or dead. South Africans, and indeed the world will never forget Nelson Mandela. Julius Nyerere of Tanzania is still close to the chest of his people. In fact, the Catholic Church had attempted to beatify him a saint. John F. Kennedy and several other Presidents live on, in the minds and spirits of every true citizen of the United States. I will tell him that: ‘’It is not how long but how well...’’ For real Citizens, his intention to run for a second term hurts. It brings sadness on many faces and sighs on many lips. That’s because the government is characterized by hunger, hardship, high cost of living, loss of lives and properties for cows' sake....Any sincere Nigerian will tell you that this government has brought so much hardship instead of happiness to Nigeria and Nigerians. Less wonder why the declaration was unpopular as his policy, programme, politics and projects [if any]. But my disappointment is not only with the government but also with the governed. That’s because a lot of us prefer to suffer in silence. Everyone wants to preserve and protect his life. No one wants to speak out for fear of being marked and maimed. The Musicians fear to sing against the evils in government. All I hear now is music without a message. Some of my colleagues-Journalist, fear to reflect reality in their reports. All I watch and read now are; sycophantic and flattering reports replete with falsehood. Preachers don’t preach the truth anymore. Pulpits are now used to praise Politicians in power in anticipation for only GOD knows what? We will all give account, someday, somewhere, somehow, either here or hereafter. I don’t blame those aides and close men of Buhari who give the impression that all is well because it’s difficult for a man to say NO when his pay cheque depends on him saying YES. The Country is in a critical condition. I’m yet to know a sector of this Nation that is doing very well. The health sector is in asphyxia in need of oxygen. The power sector is in darkness. We pay for darkness as often as the bills come. The educational sector had long gone memory lane. Transportation exists as a ministry. The Agricultural sector has been taken over by cows. Security is now a self-defence thing or have you soon forgotten that CHANGE begins with you? by TONY BASSEY
