By Itam Offor
The Cross River State House of Assembly Service Commission Bill Has Passed through second reading.
The Bill which was sponsored by the Member Representing Calabar south 1 and the Chief Whip of the House , RT Hon Okon Ephraim, was subsequently commited to the Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petition and Conflict Resolution with a mandate to report back within two weeks.
In his presentation, the sponsor of the Bill noted that the establishment of the Commission was necessary in view of the autonomy recently granted the legislature by the Federal Government. He added that the Commission will greatly facilitate the growth and development of the Legislature as it will help the Assembly retain trained and experienced staff while also creating employment opportunity for citizens.
Okon who regretted that the Bill was passed by the 7th and 8th Assemblies without being assented to,expressed confidence that it will be successful this time.
The Lawmakers who overwhelmingly supported the Bill outlined its benefits to include; enhanced service delivery, better training opportunities for Legislators and Staff, promotions and Job satisfaction amongst others.
In a related development, the Cross River State Consumer Protection Bill 2020 has passed through first reading on the floor of the House.
