HOUSE COMMITTEE ON LAND WADES INTO BASIN LAND DISPUTE.
By Itam Offor
The State House of Assembly Committee on Lands, New Cities and Social Housing headed by Hon. Godwin Akwaji has sued for a peaceful resolution of the alleged encroachment into Basin land by private developers.
The Chairman was speaking during a meeting between the Management of the Cross River Basin Development Authority and the landlords and tenants of Ikot Enobong, Eight miles held recently at the Assembly Complex Calabar.
Akwaji disclosed that the House had received an SOS from the landlords and tenants who claim that the management of Basin Authority had threatened to demolish their houses for encroachment. He directed that all development on the disputed parcel of land should be discontinued until the matter is fully resolved as it is threatening the peaceful co-existence of the members of the community.
Speaking, the Managing Director of Basin Authority, Engr Ukposong stated that Basin Authority commenced operations in 1980 with 195 hectares for which the Federal Government duly paid compensation adding that over time the land has been encroached upon.
Earlier, Mr. Simon Sunny who spoke on behalf of the landlords and occupants of the disputed area stated that they acquired the land legally. He asserted that ‘’there is no encroachment on Basin land’’ and tendered documents to buttress his claim.
