Over the years, social vices such as hooliganism and truancy, among others have become a malaise among youths in campuses cross Nigeria. In a bid to curb these vices, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Cross River Axis in collaboration with Commandant Peace Corps and State Security Adviser Cross River State held a SUSTAINABLE ACTION AGAINST SOCIAL VICES IN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING at College of Health Technology, Calabar.
Speaking the Wife of Cross River State Governor, Dr Linda Ayade who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Cross River State Ministry of Health, Dr Joseph Bassey said there is need for students unions to partner security agencies to check all social vices. The first one is cultism. Before now, cultism was restricted to university.
"Today, cultism has spread to primary, secondary schools and artisans. Cult groups now fight each other with dangerous weapons over girlfriends, they fight lecturers, and are even used by politicians.
"Most worrisome are some rusticated students going to primary and secondary schools to recruit underage into cultism and other crimes.
"The second vice is drug abuse. Many students, particularly lower level students, are into hard drugs. Many secondary school students now take tramadol and other hard drugs," he said.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Summit, Commandant of Peace Corp of Nigeria, Dominic Okweche charged students' union leaders to partner the peace corp in fighting cultism and drug abuse.
He said the position of the leaders was strategic, and they had vital roles to play in getting solutions to security challenges in Nigeria.
Okweche reitrated his stand to continue supporting the students' leaders to use their network to champion the campaign against cultism and drug abuse and take this to different students at all levels.
He also called on them to give useful information about some of the students or rusticated students recruiting others into cultism or hard drugs for profiling.
"If we do not do something about these vices now, they will consume us in future," he said.

Earlier Speaking, the NANS, Joint Campus Committee Chairman Cross River Axis Efenji Helen said the was need to put an end to anti social vices and some other crimes in campuses.
Efenji stressed that her efforts was to ensure Nigerian Students were properly informed about these social vices in their campuses.
She commended Her Excellency, Dr Linda Ayade, the Commandant for protecting the students, assuring him of their cooperation to check vices in schools.
